This topic is for the discussion of Anime - The Japanese animation which is either loved or hated by the majority of movie-going individuals.

My experience of the art form is limited however, only being familiar with the films "Princess Mononoke" "Spirited Away" & "Howls Moving Castle".

So if there are any Anime experts out there, please feel free to jump straight into this thread and recommend me some movies that I can't live without!

Cheers.

Only ever got into Death Note and the little that I've seen of Ghost in the Shell as far as anime goes. Any reccommendations?

If you enjoy cute little girls getting murdered in the most brutal and bloody ways imaginable, check out Higurashi. However, that maybe way too much for a newcomer, so I recommend Gundam, preferably Gundam 0083.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni really is pretty awesome, as are the second series (which I think I like even better than the first) and both short spin-offs. Still have to watch Umineko No Naku Koro Ni which is basically a part 3 with new characters and story line, so I'm looking forwards to that, heard it was also pretty good from a friend

But yeah, I'd say it might be a bit much and it's definitely not for sensitive people it's pretty sick, especially the first series.

I don't recall any particularly sexual situations (of any sort) in DragonBall? I've heard the original Japanese versions are quite explicit with language. Has been a while since I watched it though.

As for NGE, yeah I can see that. Asuka is hot though.

I dont know about that, I was watching it today and Bulma offered Goku to show her a "peek" if he gave her the dragonball. I think that is sexual. There is also a bit of nudity in the first episodes

Tons of anime and manga are now illegal in Sweden, and soon they will be banned across the EU.

If this law is passed, everyone in Europe who happens to enjoy anime and manga may soon be seen as pedophiles. Seriously, this moral crusade has gotten way out of hand. We could try telling these politicians that what they're doing violates the principles of free expression on so many grounds, but I doubt it will do any good, since the governments of the world have shown that they don't give a shit what the people think, for they believe the public has no idea what is best for themselves.

Hi! I'm a long time anime fan and I thought I'd just jump in here at the end instead of reading the massive 22 pages this thread has collected. Hate me yet? Well, here's some more fodder for you as I give you my top ten anime titles:

1. Gundam Wing
2. Gurren Lagann
3. Fullmetal Alchemist (the first series)
4. FLCL
5. Tenchi Muyo! (the whole franchise)
6. Princess Mononoke (gotta pick one Ghibli film)
7. Outlaw Star
8. Blue Submarine No. 6
9. Kodocha
10. Card Captor Sakura

Proceed to thoughtfully explain why my list sucks, or simply ignore me for my sudden pretentiousness. (Seriously, though, I plan to graciously participate from here on out if you'll just indulge me this once.)

I don't watch very much animes because I don't have time to do it, but I like it. I particulary like a movie from final fantasy:advent children (alright is a computer animation, don't know if can be considered anime). I think it's a very beatifull movie, with great graphics

I think I would call it anime, mostly because it was produced and animated by the Japanese for a Japanese audience. It's kind of how I differentiate between stuff like that and, say, Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, it becomes harder with things like Batman: Gotham Knight.

Anyway, I agree that FF:AC was incredible, between the set pieces and the fight choreography. But then again, I like FF: Spirits Within as well. Horribly underrated, I thought it was a fun sci-fi movie that probably shouldn't have had Final Fantasy in the title. Doing that only raised people's expectations in the wrong direction.

I know people usually don't consider it anime, but personally I've watched and enjoyed the whole show and honestly consider it as being much closer to anime than to western cartoons as far as storyline, dialogue, themes and even parts of the drawing style are concerned. Sure it was produced in America by americans, but I'm pretty sure if it were exactly the same as it is, just produced in Japan, everyone would consider it anime.

By the way from your earlier list Full Metal Alchemist is of course fantastic, although I'm not sure if I like the first or second series better, they both have their advantages and are both great I enjoyed FLCL quite much too, but it was confusing as hell

Hah. Don't get me wrong; I totally loved Avatar: TLA (the movie hurt though). While it's easy to say that it looks and feels like anime (and the tedious work was outsourced to Korea just like anime), I think Avatar is still very Western in some of its story telling and characterization. I'll definitely agree that it wasn't like anything else in Western animation (except perhaps Gargoyles or maybe Thundercats) with its epic, slow-building story.

I've only seen about 20 episodes of FMA:Brotherhood I think I'm going to prefer the first series in the long run because it took more risks and made more changes than a standard manga-adaptation, which is what the second series is. Again, don't get me wrong; I love the manga and FMA:B looks like a great adaptation, just not enough to be in my top ten. As for FLCL, I love the fact that it is the anime with the most replay value. I've seen it through probably three or four times and there's still new stuff that I pick up on. How many other anime series can you say that about? (Actually, that's can be a sincere question now that I think about it. Are there any?)

After what I heard about it, I really didn't want to watch the movie..

As for FMA:B, fair enough, although not having read the manga I don't share that concern and I usually hate watching things I've already seen, so almost nothing has any replay value to me personally, but I did watch Death Note twice, first time alone and second time with my girlfriend and that one was still fantastic the second time. There's some others I might want to rewatch some day, but definitely not a lot.

By the way does anyone know anything about the new Berserk movie that's apparently coming out this year?

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: 7/10
Good one, many brilliant moments, loved the random gore, which is the reason why I decided to see this one. A bit too messy, especially when at first you don't know it's based on many separate arcs, but definitely worth watching.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai: 6.5/10
A lot of the stuff is NOW clear, but where's my gore, where's my blood, where are my spirited-eyed lolis? This is too slow-paced imo and could have worked better with only half eps. the last 3/4 ones are excellent though.

Black Lagoon: 8.5/10
holy shit, this show reminds me a lot of Cowboy Bebop and this is obviously a good thing. Revy is easily one of the most badass characters in any anime and all the other ones are quite enjoyable too. Ep 7 is an instant classic and one of my favourite eps ever in any anime I've ever seen. Definitely need to watch the sequel.

Azumanga Daioh: 9/10
At the end of this show I admit tears came to my eyes, I love this kind of slice-of-life stories. AD has everything you would expect from a bunch of little girls from highschool: fun, cuteness, good memories, fears, hopes. Also it got Osaka, definitely in my top 3 characters ever.

If you're into manga, you need to check out Yotsuba&. It's by the same creator and has the same wacky, down-to-earth, slice-of-life stuff that Azumanga Daioh had, except instead of high school girls, you get a dad and his 4-year-old daughter (the title character), and their neighbors and friends. Impossibly charming and fun.

Just in the second part of Code Geass. A great show, very morally ambiguous. Lelouche is a hero that is more evil than the vast majority of villians floating. He reminds me of Light from Death note, except Lelouch has a very important and good intentioned motive behind it; whereas Light is just a douche.
I am a little annoyed at the second part though. The first season ended at what seemed to be an almost apocalyptic point, and the second season just sorta went back to the old formula. There is still greatness to the second part, but I feel kind of cheated.

While Code Geass is a pretty good series, I felt that it relied too heavily on plot twists, eventually making the series needlessly convoluted. It worked alright for the first season, but by the time the second season gets rolling, it just felt like a mess to me.

As for the character designs, I take it you're not a big fan of modern CLAMP (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, etc.), because they designed them. They've always had a thing for tall, thin, lanky men, but their style has become very stream-lined lately (I prefer their older styles). I personally love CLAMP, but if you find them appalling then there's little I can say. To each their own.

I do understand that a new Code Geass series is being made. I understand that they're going to do an alternate version with the characters in Europe instead of Japan or something.

I just find the characters look extremely gaunt and abnormal (within the spheres of anime). Like the cast of Yu-Gi-Oh had gone on a hunger strike. The colour palette didn't please me either. I'm sure I'll push on through and watch it at some point. After everything else I intend to watch anyway.

The art style gets progressively better. It's the animators who did Card captors and that crap, so everyone is abnormally thin, especially in their limbs. But give it another go. I was a bit eh on it myself, then I got to about the 6th or seventh episode and watched the rest in a single sitting.
