The last few years, Xasthur have released album after album without any break and is becoming more and more popular and well liked amongst black metal fans by everyday that passes.

On one side of the spectrum, it's good to see a band is active and is constantly releasing new material, it shows the band's devotion to the music they play and will probably also please their fans, but on other hand, a problem that might occur is that you can run out of ideas. Xasthur is a band that have not fallen into this mud, yet, and each one of their releases still have something interesting to offer, but they still must be very careful to not become a victim of this problem because I can already hear that some of their songs have a very similar structure and sometimes it appears to me that some of their riffs get repeated too often.

WARNING: This is a highly subjective review written by a fangirl and it might get super complicated.

I'm irresistibly attracted to any sound which is capable of creating and conveying the abyss of feelings and melancholic atmosphere. Yeah, I'm a sucker for that, in other words I believe that Xasthur is one of the greatest examples of them. Get ready fans of dark depressive metal (I am not going to apologize for using those words for Xasthur music.)

But actually these last three days was the first time ever that my attention went around Xasthur, I never cared for this band before as far I remember.

You're right. Usually I don't listen to much of depressive black metal, but Xasthur sounds unique, specially now that I know the musician behind the music has a very particular approach in his art, it seems that his music is a sort of expression of his very personal and inner world, and a self-reflective art is always precious to me, I like these types of people. There is no distinct line between they themselves and their art, they're drowned and become one unit with their own artistic creation. That's something rare these days.

Yeah i felt the same way about his music. Xasthur was one of the first bm bands i started listening to and felt a connection with it. I was kind of bummed when everyone on the net was saying it was just "bedroom bm" a popular thing at time, just a fad everyone was going through but the music was actually shit.

Sure sounds like "bedroom bm" to me. I don't hear anything special or worth coming back to. Just another run-of-the-mill black metal band that people seem to worship for some reason.

The Funeral Of Being was good but everything else (Violate The Obvious, Nocturnal Poisoning, this album) made me wanna go back to that, or listen to other bands. Pity.

yeah but you have shit tastes, so who cares

Holy shit, you're so steamed at having your favorite band insulted you forgot about capitalization and punctuation.

If I had "shit taste," would I be listening to the black metal that's better than this (i.e. Leviathan, Lurker Of Chalice, Wolves In The Throne Room, Krallice, etc.)?

Seriously, dude: Calm down, listen to better black metal, improve your arguments. It may just save your life (or at the very least, make you a better addition to society).

it was just a joke mocking you about the way you think your opinion is the only one that matters. But hey, if you like to go click onto threads about bands you don't like so you can voice your almighty opinion that they suck, that's fine, i guess it's just how some people like to get there kicks.

Anyway i wouldn't call it "run of the mill" black metal, though not all the albums are good and i wouldn't worship him either

btw, when have i ever used punctuation or capitalization

I don't think that the band is "Just another run-of-the-mill black metal" but I definitely agree with you about the quality of music. Good to see that I'm not the only one disliking xasthur.

The whole characteristic of Xasthur is its quality, you guys are crazy expecting a highly processed sound from Xasthur ! But you have Dummy Borgir for such quality sound, you know?

Xasthur have a lot of duff, copy-pasta albums (and also a few great ones) but to call them run-of-the-mill when there's only one other band that sounds anything like them (to my knowledge: Moon) is kind of wrong.

Yea, Xasthur is one of those bands that you use to describe other bands. Which, by definition, does not make it a run-of-the-mill project.

Why? I made my point: The band's boring and orthodox, it sounds like it was recorded in a basement, wasted riffs and blastbeat-laden, etc. Why do I have to elaborate upon it so a bunch of soreheads can drill holes in it like it's some country in the Middle East just to say how wrong I am? It's not like it's gonna make the music any better, and it's not like it's gonna change your opinion, and it's not like I'm gonna care whether it does or not. No skin off my nose. There's better black metal out there, especially in the USBM scene it associates itself with.

If you have a beef with my opinion, that's your problem. Now if you'll excuse me... I'm gonna go listen to Weakling.

I think, as usual, it's a substance and form problem with Lit's post. I wouldn't call Xasthur run-of-the-mill, but his opinion isn't exactly controversial or anything.

I have trouble thinking of Xasthur as a generic bedroom black metal band considering the distinctive identity of his sound. I've never felt that Xasthur were really a riff-oriented band either, rather it's more about textures and ambience. But there we go.

Xasthur is ALL about textures and ambience and totally not about riffs and blastbeats. And of course Xasthur does have a distinctive identity of its sound. Nothing generic about it at all. Maybe the only thing that could be described as such is the recording value of quite a lot of the albums. But then again that recording value is perfect for the textures and ambience on those albums.

This album is his best I think. Very atmospheric and moody with a very unique feel. One of the few albums I feel captures the “evil” vibe perfectly. It feels like I’m listening to a suicide.
