I seen that there is a football thread, but felt that a big tournament like Euro 2012 deserved it's own thread. So here it is!

I was really impressed by the Russians. The Czech Republic are no slouches, but Russia just seemed to have too much for them to cope with. They should definitely top their group. The Poland v Greece match was very exciting, even though controversy played a large part in that. I dunno what the referee was thinking, as both of the yellow cards which led to Papastathopoulos' sending off weren't even fouls, let alone yellow cards! The Greeks showed such spirit in the 2nd half to come back with 10 men, and I felt they deserved to win it, shame they only got a draw...

Can't wait for the 2 games today, they should both be great!

Eng - Fra

It's not boring. Theres some decent football on display and two goals so far, it's hardly the game of the tournament so far, but its not a bad game either.

EDIT: FUCK THAT SECOND HALF WAS BORING .

Well, I think its a granted we're gonna play at least fairly negatively; its just Trappatoni's way, I wish it wasn't (and I firmly believe we have the footballers to play a very good, flowing game). The thing about the Croatian game was....the guys that normally carry us to some extent (especially Richard Dunne, Kevin Doyle and Shay Given) seemed a bit nervous, and some of the players (just about our entire midfield line) seemed to be unsure of their roles. Normally, our winger get some joy, but yesterday....neither of them were up to much (though I wasn't expecting much from Aiden McGeady in truth). Still, a few choice changes and a bit of a tongue lashing for some of our players, and I think we have every right to expect to go out fighting against the Spanish.

On a more cheery note, the France-England game seem to be going well enough for both sides (more so for England I think), some chances, and overall good enough football. Danny Welback seems to be playing well, one of my more favoured players from United (the family PL favourite club here, lol).

It is Trappatoni's way, but I really don't think Ireland can play negatively against Spain if they want a realistic chance of getting something from the game. Of course, they'll need to be a bit cautious, but they also really need to get in amongst the Spanish and try to unsettle them a bit.

1-1 at half time in the England game. Which I think is a fair reflection of the first half. France were the better side for the bulk of the half despite not really threatening England, aside from the goal, and a great header by Diarra which forced a good save from Joe Hart. I don't think Joe was really to blame for the goal, as he was unsighted, and I think it may have also taken a deflection on it's way through to the goal. England though, had the best chance of the game outwith the goals themselves, as Milner missed a great chance to open the scoring, but missed an empty net. Good game so far.

I want to ask you: do english fans cheer on team of England only or do you cheer on teams of other countries of United Kingdom too?

Well, I certainly do! I think this hating other nations though (in a friendly way lol) is more a blokish thing really... Besides, I was born in Scotland, though I have a English mother. (and a Chilean father) So naturally, I support both teams, but I also cheer on the Irish and the Welsh when they play.

I also support Germany (unless they're playing against one of the home teams or Sweden), which to many English supporters amounts to treason!

The rivalry is mainly down to the war, though as you say, that's probably more on the English than the German side...

So the game ended 1-1... probably a fair result in the end. I think both teams were feeling the heat (literally!) in the last 20 or so minutes, especially England, and France maybe slightly edged the play, even though England mainly reduced them to making shots outside of the box. Good start for England though.

He was great too. The new generation of commentators isn't as good as the previous one, that's for sure...

0-0 in the Ukraine-Sweden game, and it's a good game so far. Ukraine were all over Sweden in the last 20 minutes of the half, although Ibrahimovic had a golden chance to score, and should have, but hit the post instead...

Agree, even the swedish journalists said Ukraine totally deserved it considering their performance. Here's hoping that the next games will be better for Sweden.

Well, I was supporting Sweden, but despite the chances they had, especially near the end, I think Ukraine did just enough over the course of the game to deserve the win. They were constantly the more aggressive, attacking side, aside from the last 15-10 minutes, and they were constantly piling the pressure on the Swedes. Sweden did show glimpses of what they were capable of, but I think maybe the ocassion of playing against the host nation just got to them in the end. They will need to up their game against England, that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see Christian Wilhelmsson start that game, as when he came on, he did cause the Ukrainian defence all sorts of problems.

Shevchenko was great though! He might have lost some of his agility and pace with age, but his movement and football brain is still as great as ever, and both his goals were amazing.

Ukraine 2-1 Sweden
Andriy Shevchenko 51, 55 Zlatan Ibrahimovic 52

1th since I saw German banners from german ultras , I thought its Olimpia Stadion in berlin and Herta BSC(Sweden) plays whit Borrusia Dortmund(ok Ukraine yellow is not same how Borussia but .... 9 only such banners shood be in Gest Block , it means its in Olimpia Stadion in belrin are in another side and besides Ukraine goaly Andriy Pyatov wa slil simmilar tro Jens Lehman

Probobly Im only who wrotes such blabbla about game

I thgink result is fair Ukr was better, in 1th halg thay were better, attack more dangerose, swe attack but till good goal chance only Zlatan heder was 100% , in secend half Swe start good, I think Swe would win if there wont eb such fast Shevchengo goals, after he left Milan and even Chelsea seems we dont see him, dont hear him, seems this was his most important 2 goals in last 2-3 years , BTW in this WC almost all teams after let goal get beck goal werry fast, so and even after those goals Ukr was lil better and Swe simply didnt use 2-3 good chances in the end

Regarding the English people and the other UK member countries... If any of the other UK countries were in the tournament, I would be cheering for them too. It's extremely cynical to say that "they hate us so we hate them"... attitudes like that get us nowhere.

I'm satisfied with the point against France. I think they looked a little better than us, but it could have gone either way. We just need to perform in the same way against Sweden and Ukraine now!

Well said! I also think it is true that there are way more English people who support the other home nations, than there are from the other home nations who support England. The other home nations love to see England lose, especially Scotland, which is sad...

Totally agreed about the France game. I think France did look slightly better, but there certainly wasn't the huge gulf in class between the teams that many had suggested was the case before the start of the match. We certainly held our own against them, and only really started to falter near the end when it was clear that the very hot temperatures where starting to affect the English players. I think we have given ourselves a real chance of getting out of the group, although I certainly think the Sweden and Ukraine games will be tougher than our TV pundits (predictably it has to be said! ) tried to suggest last night. Aside from good old Motty, who was the voice of reason! lol

I never said they did, though that fact is very sad. I actually want Scottish independance, but that has nothing to do with having any animosity towards England, or having a fervorous patriotism for Scotland. I'm just as much an English fan as a Scottish fan when it comes to football, and see myself as much of a English girl as I do a Scottish one. As for football hooliganism in this country, yep it still exists, but it doesn't seem half as bad today, as it was in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. It's certainly in the news far less anyway... what was once a very sizeable minority is now a tiny minority I think. Though that could have as much to do with football being far less of a working class sport than it was years ago as much as anything else. I dunno...

Back to the championship! Although I've supported the Czech's a lot through the years, the spirited performance the Greeks showed to come back after that horrendous sending off decision, has made me want to see them go through, so I'll be rooting for them! If Greece can summon up the same passion and spirit as they showed in the second half against Poland in the game today, then they have a real chance of grabbing all 3 points. Although on paper, the Czech's should win.

As for the Poland-Russia match, well, Russia are obviously the favourites... I think if Poland are going to have any chance, they need to use the home support to their advantage as the Ukraine did yesterday. I think Sweden were intimidated by that for sure, and it certainly was a factor in the result. I have a feeling Sweden will give England a far harder time than they gave the Ukraine. I still want Sweden to go through with England, although the romantic part of me really wants to see Shevchenko doing well, and taking Ukraine far in the tournament... I really got caught up in the passion of the game last night, and I've always been a Shevchenko fan so it definitely was a lump in the throat moment when he put those goals in. xD

My problems against Joe Hart aren't that he's bad, like I said imo he's become a properly assured goalie. My problems with him were the initial pushing out of (and career ruination to a certain extent for me) Shay Given

Yea, that's a Given... IMO if the Platini inspired regulations on home grown players weren't introduced (which i agree with, despite there orignal anti-merchenary nature, as for instance England would be picking there side out of the Championship the way things were going) then Given would probably still be Man City keeper. First kinda undocumented casualty of it. Or at the very least, Hart wouldnt of had a look-in for that particular season. Given was always in my dream teams cause he was never given a huge name (even though he was awesome) an could singlehandly win a game with his explosive reactions giving extra MOM points. An ye, his got a bit of a belly now.

Just seen the highlights of En v Fra and hope Frances cynical techinical fouls come undone big time against a good side. Diarra is awesome! That Cabaye is an even bigger little shit at international level! Ribery looks like Gary Neville aftera car crash! An overall it must of been hot cos it was a shit game.
