I know there are a lot of Helloween fans here. They're probably my absolute favourite power metal band of all time. I love how they can produce the serious songs and then make songs such as 'Perfect Gentleman'. Like most fans, I perfer the Kiske/Hansen albums to the more recent ones. I think Deris' voice is more suited for a heavy metal band TBH. Though it is still enjoyable to listen to him.

What are your thoughts on this band?

Rhapsody have the worst Helloween cover I have ever heard. I liked Angel Steel, Metalium and Iron Saviours covers from the tribute album, but whole tribute album is pretty cool in generally. HammerFall and Kai Hansen's I want out is the best Helloween cover ever if you ask me. Also heard some interesting Helloween covers by Stigmata and Rabellion

@ Daniel: not only Helloween is the best power metal band, but I must say that power metal wouldn't be what it is today without Helloween.

I dunno enough about them to know the different "periods" etc... I only know I love the Keeper of the Seven Keys 1 & 2 and Master of the Rings Those albums are great IMO. I also quite liked the Dark Ride and Walls of Jericho. Should try out more by them!

Completely agree, I don't really know what to add on your post. You can listen to many new power metal bands and you wil surely find some of Helloween influence. Example: Cellador, DragonForce...

Yeah definantly, you guys are right, They've had a massive impact on most power metal bands and many that ive heard always seem too have a bit of Helloween influence in them, or have same sounds etc

Helloween were also the first band to call themselves Power Metal. They differentiated themselves from the Speed Metal style prevalent in Germany in the mid-80s first by using the term Power Metal, even though their style on their self-titled EP and first full-length 'Walls of Jericho' was pretty much the same as other Speed Metal acts. Then, in 1987 with 'Keeper of the Seven Keys, pt.1', modern Power Metal was born!

It's amazing how well the two Keeper albums have aged. I can listen to them both today, and if I didn't know better I would say that any of a number of modern Power Metal bands could have been responsible, but it's incredible that these were the very first albums of the genre as we know it today. So fresh still!

Ok Baz, I didn't want to scare you, please don't kill me : ))). I just think that they are only pale shadow of a band they used to be, and there is no chance in hell that new songs are as good as old, common man, compare Mrs.God and Metal Invaders, or even with something from Time Of The Oath album and Dark Ride album. They are more some Rock for me now, like from Chameleon or Pink Bubbles Go Ape period

some sort of rock? have you heard "The Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy"? - "Mrs. God" is the least metal song on there (apart from "Light The Universe") and is definitely the most commercial - hence them using it as the first single
listen to "King For A 1000 Years" or even "Silent Rain" - that song is so fast they had to get a new drummer.. (Dani)
the album is 100% a power metal album..

and about the band not being as good as they were at first - that happens to almost all bands.. look at Iron Maiden, look at Slayer, look at Cradle Of Filth, even Rhapsody..
there are plenty more then these as well.. all of these have gone downhill over time or their last release was not so good..
I would pick the new Helloween album over the new Iron Maiden album or any other of these any day..

Maybe, but those albums are not the one who inflenced hordes of power metal bands. Abd if they were released 15 years ago, who knows what would happen, anyway, I didn't offending any of those albums, they are good, and I like them (I already wrote couple of pages before (or maybe on power metal thread or something, not sure) that I like all Helloween albums except Pink Bubbles. that is horrible), but the old and new sound is totally different, like CoF, Slayer... Someone like it, someone not... I like it but again I was talking about albums who influenced today power bands, and Legacy is not very powerish for me..

Many many years ago, when I started to listen music HELLOWEEN and their WALLS OF JERICHO was first my band. I have this casette yet. Every album, every song is prefect as Perfect gentleman. Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen were my favourite at that time. I never play the guitar as Mr. HELLOWEEN. Perhabs only A Tale That Wasn't Right. Keeper Of The Seven Keys is my best.

He's really good, but no-one can ever really take Ingo Schwichtenberg's place for me, his drumming and stage presence and general coolness is unattainable for others. RIP Ingo, keep smiling, we love you, and miss you lots.

Holy shit, that's probably the most sentimental thing I've ever posted...

On Saturday, I think I'll have a Helloween marathon. I'm going to play their entire discography, plus the tribute albums, and watch the two DVDs. I'll probably wear my Helloween shirt out on Saturday night too!

I agree with Judas that Ingo is best Helloween drumer ever, his attitude while playing drums is something no one can't replace and his galloping rhytms are integral part of older Helloween hymns.

RIP Ingo

When Rhapsody did their Helloween cover, weren't they Thundercross at the time

A really damn good Helloween cover is Stormwarrior's "Heavy Metal (Is The Law)" w/ Kai Hansen

I'd probably agree with that, Rhapsody did a brilliant job, and probably 'realised' what Helloween had wanted to do originally when they wrote that song.

About the new album cover, well, it's nothing wildly different for Helloween. If it's not funny and cartoonish then it's strange but cheesy, I guess. None of their covers (aside from the three Keeper albums) have been exceptional.

yeh, it's a little frustrating seeing everyone bashing the front cover already.. I mean at least it isn't boring and plain, and because of that - I like it..
I'm not the biggest fan of the 3D business with covers, but it is still interesting..
and of course it is the content of the album that is most important

"Under the direction of producer Charlie Bauerfeind, HELLOWEEN recorded a total of 16 songs at the Mi Sueno studios in Tenerife. Except for two or three tracks, these new compositions are all included on "Gambling With The Devil", among them the impressive intro, featuring "Crack The Riddle", with Biff Byford (SAXON) as a guest speaker. The focal point of this diverse album is a three-part epos consisting of the chapters "The Bells Of The Seven Hells", "Falling To Pieces" and "I.M.E.", which represent the ambiguous album title that thematically covers all the songs. "At the end of the day, life is a gamble with the devil," Deris explains. The first single release (with the exception of South East Asia - download only) will be "As Long As I Fall", supported by a video clip which will be shot in Munich at the end of August. The cover artwork was designed by Martin Häusler ("Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy" and "Live On 3 Continents") again, and the booklet will include a scratch card puzzle, giving fans a chance to win a lucrative prize: a concert ticket for a show during the band's upcoming tour of South America, including flight and accommodation. The album will also be released as a limited-edition digipak in a slipcase with a bonus disc, including two unreleased songs, a video and lots of enhanced material."

sounds interesting!!!
