Randy Rhoads. I'm going to be shot for saying this in this topic, but I think Dimebag was a little overrated, and if not him, Pantera as a whole. Cliff was legendary, but his bass is usually mixed out into the background. Like Murderface. He didn't get the sound he deserved in the records. Cept on Orion and Anesthesia.

Many, many musicians have come and gone in all genres that will be missed, but since this is a metal forum I will go with Chuck Schuldiner as the most missed for me. Death was my introduction into death metal and will always be one of my favorite bands.

23.05.2008 - 06:28 Written by Hangar XVIII on 14.03.2008 at 15:35 I agree. Cliff Burton was so amazing that most people can only talk of his legend, but what record was he so insane on? None of them. He was a live showcaser, and the best metal bass shredder that ever lived. Jason Newsted is good, but Cliff was a legend. No one has ever played a bass like that crazy guy. Chuck Shuldiner was a pioneer, and a very skilled songwriter and musician. I like Death's music, and I'm not even a big death metal fan, but those guys had something, and that something was Chuck. A genius can make cacophony sound decent. Randy Rhoads IS the greatest metal guitarist of all time, if you ask me. He was lightning fast, he wrote the coolest riffs (you think Ozzy was plucking those notes at songwriting?) and had the most "metal" technique of his time. Totally great, in every way. But my favorite dead artist is Jimi Hendrix. I still remember the first time I heard the Star Spangled Banner, and I saw rockets and heard the bombs bursting, and I decided that this guy had something divine about his playing that I haven't heard out of anyone else. Like his ideas were coming from another planet and by the time they got to our earthly ears just sounds like crazy, psychedelic music. No one was better than him at the time (arguably) and people here in the US, 40 years later, are just now deciphering some of his code and able to play some of his stuff note for note. He was the best, and the most divinely inspired musician I've ever seen.

Sure Cliff Burton is my "favourite", but do I really miss him? I mean, he died 4 years before I was born. No, the one I really miss is Jon Nödtveidt of Dissection. Sure Reinkaos was boring but I know many of us still had the hope of a new The Somberlain or even a Storm of the Light's Bane. He wrote some of the most crushing songs ever!

21.07.2008 - 20:15 Written by dark awakening on 21.07.2008 at 19:45 No disrespect to Mr. Schuldiner and his accomplishments (many Death albums are milestones of the genre) But there were many death metal bands before Death so the idea that he invented the genre or named it is a misconception. Obviously you realize this and I assume you are talking about Death's more progressive albums. However bands like Athiest, Cynic and Pestilence were playing the same brand of progressive death metal at the same time Death was. I'm not saying any of these bands started the sub-genre. I'm just saying we can't praise just one man for it's creation. Similar to thrash metal in the early to mid 80's, it was just a bunch of bands starting it all at once.
