Uriah Heep had released several albums by the time Demons And Wizards was released, including the critically acclaimed Look At Yourself, which was released the previous year, and is also one of my all-time favourite albums. However, it was this fourth release, Demons And Wizards, that really established the band Uriah Heep as a household name in British hard rock history.

This sweet album is 50 years old. It inspired several generations of musicians and it is still one of the best progressive rock releases of all time. Compared to the more famous 70s powerhouse bands, Uriah Heep are likely the most influential band you have hardly known anything about until now, and it is time to remedy that.

So whether you are a traveler in time, a wizard, or a simple rainbow demon, do yourself a favor and discover or revisit this classic album as your civic duty for 2022.

Excellent album; a paradox with this album is that the two hits on it - The Wizard and Easy Livin' are the weakest tracks, good songs though.

I thought Easy Livin' was a pretty good song actually. Love the keyboard or organ or whatever on that one.

You misread what i wrote there, i never said the songs were NOT good.
I agree, the keyboard work on Easy Livin' is great.
And talking about Easy Livin', I love WASP's cover of it.

Oh true... Especially probably should have read that one better considering you even explicitly pointed out they were both still good...

Also checked out the WASP cover and you're right man it rocks!

An example of a release being so exceptional that it makes the rest of the discography sound like crap.

A great, relatively unknown gem! I probably never would have found this without MS (which I could say about a lot of great albums).

9.5/10 leaning towards a 10 for me - 'The Wizard', 'Easy Livin'' and 'Circle Of Hands' are the standout tracks IMO. 'Traveller In Time', 'Rainbow Demon' and 'The Spell' are all also great.

From these songs "Traveller In Time" is the one to look up to

Been a while since I revisited this, so finally giving this song more attention.

One of my favorites from UH and that should say a lot when they have so many great songs.

"Traveler In Time" is a great song, it sounds ahead of it's time, it's heavy, has cool lyrics, with a great riff, but "Rainbow Demon" is my favourite, and I always had a soft spot in my heart for "The Wizard".

The album has plenty of brilliant songs, so it wasn't a clear-cut choice which songs are best to me other than Traveler. I enjoy most of them, tbh -- maybe Easy Livin not so much as others. Such amazing songwriters in one band during this era.

I thought "Easy Livin" was the weakest on the album too, it wasn't a bad song, but it fell into the same trap as "Paranoid" did for Black Sabbath, it was short and very catchy, which made it radio friendly, so and became their main hit, and so it got overplayed.

Just excellent all around. So many great moments to find here.. the intro and the overall heaviness of Rainbow Demon, the fun and rocking Easy Livin, the beautiful melodies of Paradise/ The Spell and so on. All my life is a bit weaker song (with a pretty cool ending tough), would better if they would have switched it for the outstanding b-side Why.

So hard for me to rate this record... I love it for decades, it's a classic which has a huge influence on multiple Rock/Metal genres, but songwriting here, sadly, is quite uneven. "Easy Livin'", "Rainbow Demon", "Traveller In Time" and "The Wizard" are amazing 10/10 songs, but everything else falls for me in specter from 6.5 to 7.5/10. Mathematically it's become 8.3, but with all this historical significance let it be 9/10. Not perfect, but an essential and highly enjoyable album!
