From the ashes of Mortem, a death metal band, were born Arcturus, a band that would become in the forthcoming years a star to be followed, yet impossible to be reached. After the release of the 7" "My Angel" and the mini-cd "Constellation" and some changes in their line-up Arcturus reach 1995. Their line-up? Ulver's Garm on the vocals and Skoll on the bass, Mayhem's Hellhammer on the drumming, Sverd on the astral symphonies and Carl August Tidemann on the guitars. This is the year of their magnificent debut album "Aspera Hiems Symfonia".

Absolutely fantastic debut. Every song is excellent. What a shame they didn't continue with this style on their subsequent albums, because I like it the most by far.

Excellent debut, on of my 1th and all time favorite albums. symphonic same time avantgard brave step from the band, and there are no similar sounds today, what is same time so old school, also album artwork is epic, one of reasons why you should buy original CD simply to stare at such ,masterpiece , those who live in Norrland will understand what I mean whit it, listen this album at cold winter night and look to north western horizon

After hard consideration and almost 50 listens of this album over a year, I would dare to call it a masterpiece. It's everything I love about avant-garde combined with everything I love about black metal, the vocals are perfect, some solos in here are worth a mention on their own, the melodies are perfect, and the atmosphere this album creates matches it's cover art completely.

A perfect debut and one of the best albums of its kind.
