Its a good debut and it shows their talent to come in the future. The main problem in this album is probably the hilarious production.

I loved this album. It's sooo brutal, and Max's voice sounded a lot better in this album! The only problem I found here was the shitty production.

Okay, the production on this one is definitely a bit shoddy, but musically, there's very much to enjoy on this one! Sepultura were described by some as a death/thrash band when they were in their prime, although this (plus the preceding split album "Bestial Devestation") album is really the only one in their discography that has strong elements of death metal in it. And there's certainly a hint of black metal in this one too.

If you can get past the production, there are some real underrated gems to be found on this album, such as the title track, "Empire Of The Damned", and my personal fave "War". On a final, amusing note about this album, I forever remember being creeped out by the ending to "Empire Of The Damned" when I was a kid. lol

Yep, well... I was a naive 14 year old, hoodwinked by the UK and US metal press. I have learned over the ensuing years though that they were wrong about a lot of things metal related...

How is this not death thrash? It's Celtic Frost/Sarcofago sounding as heck to me. Would black thrash be a better term? I'm not amused by subdividing metal genres in the least bit, but to say this is pure thrash seems absurd to me.

edit- if it's not death thrash or black thrash, then the genre ceases to exist

How is this not death thrash?

I'm not sure why people staunchly defend this album as a purely thrash release.

This album clearly has death metal elements, and even a hint of black in there too. I can definitely see it being arguable that "Beneath The Remains" and "Arise" are pure thrash releases, but I don't know why anyone would deny that death metal elements are present on this album, when to me it should be obvious to anyone with functioning ears.

When it came out, those genres didn't really exist in any sort of defined way.

Even Possessed's Seven Churches was very Thrashy.

It's kinda like the whole "Black Sabbath are Doom Metal" argument.

It's damn right !
There're many now so called Metal bands in their late 70's - 80's called themselves Rock n' Roll / hard rock band...clearly appeared on thier track's titles.

Maybe where you're from, but here in The Netherlands and Europe Nevermind was already called grunge.

Bad English
Tage Westerlund
Lame production, quality for today standard but same time there are few things, as old school , nihilistic fuck the world msg and insane drumming and angry young lads, just do what they want, protest. I miss those days, musically they can be better but who cares, this is some music what I thought was true metal in my teens, I grow older of it but still its cool to listen it

I'd say it's the worst debut album I've ever listened to. This album obviously includes some gems, however you can barely hear them behind corrupt vocals of Cavalera, third-rate drummer playing and poor sound which ruins everything. Listening to this piece of work was a total waste of time.

Well yeah this album is Sepultura at its most primitive and savage but third-rate drumming? As for the sound, it's quite rough but very accessible.

It´s a really good first release, altough it has it´s problems (weak production, some bad vocals aswell). But for a starter, it´s a really kickass record from this legendary thrash metal band.

Oh, no. I've listened to almost all their albums starting with Schizopherenia. However, I just somehow overlooked their debut album. Well, listening to it was a real torture, sorry.
