Mostly Doom & Gothic
Jan 24, 2014
While you wait for the MS Awards to start, here's something fresh to occupy your ears for a week. This album here beats most of what I heard from the past year in gothic. And beats them by a long mile. What makes it good is the variety, ranging from the very heavy to the very atmospheric, from doom to gothic, and beyond, orchestrated and not. It even has a sax thrown in for a good measure at one point and sounding so damn good.

Just try "A Triptych Journey."

I listened to it a while back and even though I can't deny it's good ... I think the metal part of it isn't as good as the orchestral stuff , it kinda left me unimpressed except for that sax surprise. and the female vocalist is somewhat bland tbh.

still I think it's worth at least one listen.

Found it quite good - plus with vocal contributions from Marc of Germany's *Morgoth, a great Australian release, this

*Fixed by a being with a better memory.

What a fine, fine album. This is way better than I expected, and it reignited my dormant vehemence for some quality gothic metal, which had been sadly missing for a number of years up until now.

Sounds like a blackless modern Dimmu Borgir.

Lol. Not quite. More like if Dimmu Borgir were to switch gears to Gothic doom and replace Vortex with a female.

Edit: @Vice I found myself drawing the same comparison the other day while listening to this.

I have been misled. Shame on you, M C.

I thought about saying something like that in my post cause I knew else someone would.

What does the title mean, anyway?

According to Google Translate the literal translation is "Call of Empty". So I'm going to assume a more proper translation would be something like "The Call of the Void"...

Maybe I'm just craving for new great gothic metal, but this stuff sounds really good so far (as I type this I'm listening to the album).

Damn, I must say I'm surprised by an actually good gothic release for a change.

Maybe the modern Dimmu Borgir, because they most certainly were BM until just a few years ago.

Why would you assume I meant old DB?

Well, the only non-BM DB song I listened to was Dimmu Borgir - Dimmu Borgir. Pretty mediocre symphonic metal. Tried to listen to the whole album but didn't like it a lot so I never finished it. So to me DB is still linked to BM, more or less.

Just gave this a listen, a very decent debut album. Definitely could be improved on but still a worthy goth/symphonic album. A good find.

I'd say this is actually the best gothic album of the last few years. Indeed a very good find. Hell, it's even in my top 15 of my Beauty and the Beast list right now.

I really enjoy this album a lot. So much variety to be found. It can be a little cheesy, but it's the kind of cheese that's acceptable to me.

The only problem which I find is the female vocals which are a little weak, but doesn't ruin the album in any way. Might as well add it to my gothic list too

I agree to an extent. I wouldn't say the female vocals are weak, but they're not great. Just decent/good. Yeah, I would say it's a nice addition to your list. One of my top 5 albums of 2014 currently.

Giving this a cursory listen now. I like this bettwr than any of the others in the category (minus the dubiously placed Melana Chasmata). Nice orchestrations, heavy vocals, female leads have a vague Portishead sound to them. Will give more attentionlater.
