Dream Theater - New Album Details And Teaser Revealed

It has finally been revealed a new album from the iconic progressive metal band, Dream Theater. The album title is Distance Over Time and is expected to be in stores in February 2019. The cover of the album can be seen below. It's one of the new year's most expected albums, and was previewed by the band in the form of an interactive game, unprecedented in the music industry.

To lead into the initial release of material, an Alternate Reality Game was launched. This game encompassed a "treasure hunt" whereby fans were able to search for clues hidden in various photos, video, social media posts, and more. Cooperation to host the Alternate Reality Game focused on various fan communities. The band's fan club, forum members and Reddit each brought in technical expertise to create puzzles for the participants.

Ultimately, there would be one person - one fan who would be the first to solve the final clue. As their prize, this fan would be the first person to possess previously unreleased Dream Theater content. The very first person outside the band to have possession of any new music, new artwork, new album title. It would be the fans who would solve the puzzle, complete the game and break the news of the release, disseminating this brand new Dream Theater news to the world from their personal online presence.

Well, the bar is extremely low, so maybe it's not astonishingly bad this time around.

It becomes clearer that Dream Theater want to do heavier music, with LaBrie simply not being able to cope with the standards. With all due respect to LaBrie, they need to either make another Astonishing, or find a more suitable vocalist for the job.

It's just a teaser so that doesn't speak for the album, but this sounds like it lost a lot of subtlety that you would expect from Dream Theater. Partially by the muffled drum sound. I get that they want to make them sound as heavy as the guitars. But it loses identity in this production imo.

Also Kais has a point. I don't know if this style they are going for (or looks like they are going for. especially in terms of production) fits with James' voice. If you look at other Dream Theater albums with a more agressive sound like Train Of Thought, there is still a clarity in the drums which makes it feel a bit more balanced for James's voice. The drums in the teaser sound very deep and muffled. As a result in combination with the heavier riffs it makes james' voice sound a bit out of place to me.

That's it? I'm not teased at all.

I hope it does not have 34 songs...

Not another Astonishing, please. I'd be happy with another Falling into Infinity..., but not Astonishing.

I'd be happy with another Train of Thought, it seems to be going down-hill for Dream Theatre unless they pick up the pace.

I'm looking forward to being disappointed.

Also, Distance / Time = Speed. Clearly this will be a speed metal album.

How many hatred for The Astonishing. IMHO was a very nice album. I never disliked any musical proposal from Dream Theater. Their art fits greatly with myself.

And surely this new album will be great.

Sure this will be good, good melodic hard rock that is.

Same with The Astonishing. It was solid melodic / hard / opera rock with the least progressive elements in any DT album I remember till date which I don't think is a good direction for a band of this pedigree.

Every subsequent record since Mike Portnoy left is getting simpler and weaker from that perspective.

^ good melodic hard rock (if they ever do it) will still be better than The Astonishing.

The problem with The Astonishing was that it wasn't bad but not good either. It's too forgettable, which resulted in me being really disappointed in it.

I've expressed this in the past but it's just a dull record that doesn't manage to make you feel anything. Combine that with the length of the album and it becomes extremely hard to listen through it in one sitting tbh.

This is what Dream Theater try to project before releasing a new record.

That's your feeling towards the album. Not the same for myself and too many people I know and who enjoy so much this album as I did.

The teaser is nothing special and pretty generic, but I like the unexpected chord at 0:21.

Isn't that a given, that the comment I made is about my own feelings toward the album? Why would I speak for someone else about something completely subjective? I can only speak for myself, others have to decide for themselves whether they like it or not.

I don't believe JL is the culprit but instead Mike Mangini and his lack of drumming feel.
