With the album Oceans Of Slumber, the band Oceans Of Slumber followed the trajectory of their previous records into excess; with Starlight And Ash, they’ve changed direction entirely.

On first listen, definitely more taken with this one that the self-titled; they cut down a lot of the bloat. It's very much Cammie's vehicle now, but the rest of the band works well enough to work in harmony with her most of the time. The extreme elements are pretty much all gone now

Edit: Less impressed on subsequent listens - still good moments here, but a tad dull

I thought this album was boring, it's a sound that you can hear a lot out there. They were differentiated precisely by the combination of extreme progressive + doom from the other albums, it's as if we had reconquered the old Opeth, but with something more, which is Cammie's dramatic voice. After being treated so badly by their Facebook page, I'm not willing to follow them anymore, but I listened to this album just out of curiosity. I wish them success, and it will surely come, because this more commercial appeal will always have more fans than any extreme metal strand.

Really weak effort by them, they were calling this New aproach as "New Southern gothic". And the music just sounds as a rock-blues album, they left behind all the good prog-doom stuff that made them an interesting band to become just an average soft rock band with very little to offer. It would be hard for them to step forward whit such a bad performance on this record.

It's not just the softer sound that is the problem, the songwriting is so weak and bland it just puts you to sleep.

This album sounds like they're trying to write a James Bond movie intro. It ends up being very very boring. It's also not progressive at all.

I'm so sorry to say this album really doesn't work for me. I find the vocals a deep disappoint, they don't do much for me at all, they'll probably be better suited for some mainsteam act, or even chart music. The songwriting isn't necessarily bad, but it can get dreary and boring too often. The solo's are probably the only feature I admire tbh, but they don't happen often enough.

I agree with BW's comment above, this sounds very much like they are having a crack at their very own James Bond intro, which really doesn't impress me at all

I actually liked this album, despite moments where I skipped and found too dull. The highlight is without doubt the female vocals but its the heavier more bombastic sound that's missing here.

I found this album to be a really good soul album. Cammie's voice is one of the best in the industry.
