Trivium's latest album Shogun is one of the pleasant surprises for me this year, although I am new to the band and to the genre they play, which I would define as Thrash/Metalcore. To Thrash I am of course not new, but Metalcore is something that has never attracted me, but as I said Shogun surprised me, and I do think it deserves some attention from fans of both old school Thrash and all kinds of new bands that represent the genre. To be frank I was even a little blown away by this album after just the second listen, and I was even thinking about reviewing this album without checking out the rest of Trivium's discography, but I did listen to the other three albums, so the review will be objective.

"The Quaker"
Maaan first song almost sounds like old metallica or even better - i become interested. last time i've heard this band they were a little metalcore/heavy metal act with some good and lots of bad stuff.

This is quite a nice surprise for me. i must admit i was to quick to judge this band, this album is a great piece of modern technical metal, almost on par with Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God or Bullet for my Valentine's Scream Aim Fire for my favorite album of 2008.

This album is the best album ever made in human history.
7 string guitars, killer riffs and solo's..
Matt Heafy's vocals sound kinda like James Hettfeild in some parts,
but besides that this album is killer.
The album opens with a bang with Kiriste Gomen? *(I can't spell random japanese words), with awesome guitar work, and its just all round awesomeness, fast paced thrash metal.
The album then ends with the title track Shogun, a 12 minute long epic with one of the most memorable guitar solo's, and is one of the very few song;s I know all the words to.
It gets pretty blues-sy around minute 5, with a clean guitar solo, and then it boots back up into fast thrash metal around minute 7 or 8, and in the fucking awesome solo is an epic rhythym track which is about as crazy as the solo itself, making great use of the 7 string guitar.

Fuck, if you havent heard this album, download the entire album now, and listen to it from start to image, then reinsert your eardrums after they have shot from your skull after having too many eargasms.

Devil's advocate: Don't download this album unless you want to listen to generic Metallica-worshiping metalcore.

If you really thing this album it's the best album ever made in human history...you're wrong...well it's your opinion...but i don't think a recent band can do an "Best album of the century", specialy Metalcore genre!!! No No...well i like this album...but if you say that you don't like Black Sabbath or Rainbow or even Judas Priest...those bands have made something in the music History!!! That is music my friend!!!

Sure but Black sabbath and Judas Preist are a completely different beast, and I hate doom metal with a passion.

Just out of curiosity, why do you dislike them? No offense whatsoever, just curious.

I also thought this was an awesome album, and I wonder why this band is so often dismissed as another crappy metalcore band.

I don't personally hate them, but their style just doesn't cater to my interests. They sound more like a pop version of what a thrash band should be.

This, the cleans in all of their albums give me a big WTF moment, it''s a shame that such a small part of a band, can ruin it's entire sound.

Obviously their best album. In fact one of the best between mainstream metal last decade.

It has good lyrics, following historical themes, conflict and violence keeping it thrash with some metalcore and progressive metal influences. Also the technical proficiency is a show off almost, they have great progression on some songs yet keeping a heavy sound and complementing the lyrical part as the melodies and moments of each song fluctuates. Great riffs also, the drums set a almost impecable tempo through out the album. Decent vocals but nothing much to highlight there.

As I've seen here, some find the clean parts out of place. That's too bad since you are projecting your musical genre bias or "what the album should sound like" without regard to the progression of each track or even if the moments are following some variations in the song.

Trivium were one of the first bands that got me into Metal and inspired me to pick up the guitar, so I'm fully prepared to admit bias in my rating. Even so, I still see this as a fantastic album that contains everything I love about the genre.

This is a great album. It's interesting hearing interviews with Matt and how everyone hated them at the time because metal media insisted on them being the "new Metallica." Unfortunately media typically ruins the image for a lot of bands that are making legitimately great music and trying to carve their own path.
