Clandestine Cuts #2
The Metal Storm Demo/EP Spotlight
Welcome to the second edition of Clandestine Cuts, our series of articles showcasing all the latest demos, EPs and singles that we received from the many new, unsigned or unknown bands throughout the month! This new edition features (mostly) some slightly less extreme bands than the previous one and we all hope all of you might find something new to listen to by checking out these releases:
Skull Fist - Heavier Than Metal http://www.myspace.com/skullfisted Dear Tokyo Blade, Tygers Of Pan Tang and other such NWOBHM still trying to tour and create music with not but a fraction of the line-ups that made you awesome, you geriatrics can go into your much needed retirement now, there is a successor to the throne. Skull Fist play a super thrashed-out form of NWOBHM with a touch of the 80's US sound (Ratt? Skid Row anyone?) Sure, it's a cheesy throw-back, but the riffs are there, the songs are great for getting your stoke on, and this young band definitely have their hearts in the right place, with a genuine love for heavy fucking metal. This is one kick ass band to not miss out on, especially those looking for some high-energy traditional heavy metal. by Luke Godin |
Wicked Side - Promo http://www.myspace.com/wickedsideband Meet Wicked Side, a brand spanking new thrash/heavy metal band coming from Poland. Never before have I witnessed such an instantaneous decline in music quality. You would think a 3 song EP would be a short, consistent taste of what a band is about. So what is Wicked Side about? Well, the first song makes for a totally kick ass thrash intro, despite some weak James Hetfield worship on the vocal delivery. The second track has some decent riffing, slightly crappier production, slightly weaker vocals. By the 3rd and final track, the whole thing sounds like a high school band recording in their basement. If "Leader Of The Blind" is Wicked Side's chosen direction, then we're in for some promising material from this band in the future...Let's just ignore the other 2 tracks. by Luke Godin |
Inmost Ego - When Roses Fall http://www.myspace.com/inmostego Gothic/Alternative Metal with a female lead vocalist that offers nothing interesting. Vocalist has bad accent and neither her clean nor harsh vocals are particularly impressive, the compositions are also a little too predictable in their post-doom Paradise Lost mid-tempo chugga-chugga style. My advice: get a vocal coach, an english teacher and a producer who knows how to use reverb. Also, write better songs. by jupitreas |
Acelsia - Quietude EP http://www.myspace.com/acelsia This band might sound a little like Lacuna Coil or Within Temptation or maybe Nightwish. I wouldn't know - I have very low tolerance for music of this kind and sadly Acelsia doesn't make things much easier for me. All the mandatory cliches are intact - the ear-piercing soprano female vocals, the belching 'beast' grunts and the boring, mid-tempo compositions. The only thing Acelsia has that I like is some occasionally unorthodox riffing; however, I doubt this is what they'll be concentrating on for future releases, even though they should. by jupitreas |
Seven Year Kismet - The Shame Of Grace Single http://www.myspace.com/sykmusic The Shame Of Grace is the brand-new single of UK-based metallic hardcore outfit Seven Year Kismet. While I don't have a friggin' clue what a Seven Year Kismet is supposed to be, I do know this song fucking owns. It's heavy... and tight... but also thick as tar... and just, well, murderous. It's everything your mommy wouldn't want you to listen to. Here's to hoping this single is a representative sample for the rest of the upcoming new material. Cuz I definitely want more of this! PS: The official video for the song is available here. by Thryce |
Vomit The Hate - Premortem Rot EP http://www.myspace.com/vomitthehate Vomit The Hate presents promising brutal/technical death metal similar to the likes of Gorod, Centaurus-A or even Psycroptic. "As Loneliness Devours" is probably the best representative of this with its technical yet melodic lead guitar, brutal speed and harsh growls. Unfortunately, Vomit The Hate do absolutely nothing to set themselves apart from other bands of this ilk and therefore originality is what they need to work on in order to make their future full-length releases worthwhile. by jupitreas |
Phosphorus - Crepescule Demo http://www.myspace.com/phosphorusqc 2009 saw the release of this bands debut self-titled demo; an enjoyable, yet fairly unremarkable, predictable ride. Well, whatever the band was lacking before, surely they have found it! This Quebec black metal act managed to create a rowdy thrashed-out black metal release with enough interesting riffage to have a distinctive personality of it's own. There is a slight tendency toward repetition between songs occasionally, but it's a fun enough demo it will leave you with the desire to hear what these guys are capable of doing with a full album. Bring it on. by Luke Godin |
