Three years ago, I reviewed Nija by Orbit Culture and said that the record showed “hints of a potentially great record to come, rather than being a great record in and of itself”. Frustratingly, three years on and the band are pretty much in the exact same position with Descent.

I like how they based the entire second track over those bombastic brass blasts every two bars.

Cool album. The Aisle of Fire and Undercity were my favorites. There is something here that’s not clicking with me though. I want to like it more than I do.

There is something here that’s not clicking with me though. I want to like it more than I do.

I had that with this album and its predecessor - when they're on form, they can do some great songs (From The Inside was my favourite here), but it feels like there's a duffer right around the corner to temper my enthusiasm. I'm also not keen on the clean vocal style they use, which I feel holds them back a bit

I feel exactly the same way you do about this.

Not as catchy as their previous stuff, which is actually my "click" for liking this band. Bytheway, does anyone else find it waaaaaay overproduced?

Nija was definitely better. This album is decent but it DESCENDS into mediocrity at times. Not so many memorable riffs or moments. It seems like they were aiming at something new, just didn't quite get there. I hope they take some time off (2-3- years at least) before releasing anything new. They need to bounce back. Rasen is actually way more refined than this release.

The big "it" factor here is Niklas Karlsson who produced the album and did the mixing and mastering. This albums sounds monumental and I love it. Sure, the songwrtiting leaves a little more to wish for but when it sounds like this, I don't care.

Higher than cryptopsy?How?

Cryptopsy’s boring as shit so that’s probably why.

Nothing bad about this album. A descent one with some good melodies. I felt it's better than their previous.
