Long before the clean and crisp sounding, skull-splitting, face-melting, guttural, hyperactive instrumental aficionados of the modern death metal scene, there was Obituary.

Great album. A Death Metal gem. Crushing guitar riffs, uncommon vocals in death metal, mouthwatering solos and some sick lyrics. What do you want more?

I'm sure there might be some sick lyrics but he could also be singing about kittens, seeing as no one has ever seen John Tardy's lyrics and he's damn hard to understand when singing

Right, he's hard to understand, but the lyrics on Chopped In Half slay:
Chopped in half

Feel the blood spill from your mouth
With rotting ways comes destiny
Feel the soul taking over, bleed!

Guitar work on this album is extremely tight, though the riffs can sound a bit repetitive on repeated listens. I plan to listen to 'Slowly we rot' in a more focussed manner as well. It's weird that I only managed to stat listening to this band 3 months ago...

I hope this is sarcasm.

As for the album it's ok but like all Obituary those vocals get tired really quickly.

Though this is probably my favourite Obituary album.

Leaving the sarcasm, John Tardy is one of my favorite death metal vocalists of all time. His voice is so evil and full of violence (especially on Slowly We Rot) the first time it was like a punch in the face. I still enjoy it.

Only marginally less boring than their debut. I don't get what the big deal with this album - or band - is...

I've never got the appeal of them either. Some people just like plodding death metal I guess.

Plodding is a good way to describe this. They seem to have a (inordinately?) huge fan-base, at least based on the amount of shirts that I see around festivals, mostly with this album as the design.

This (and Slowly We Rot) is actually one of the few early death metal releases I prefer. Way better than the likes of early stuff by Autopsy, Asphyx, Deicide, etc.

Obituary are definitely not much similar to other death metal bands and they have their own trademark and completely different sound....Actually this album is PUNKY. I don't call this pure Death Metal.

One of the all time death metal classics! Most fans of old school death metal have proberbly heard this one, if your a fan of the genre and haven't then you must!

It has sadistic lyrics, performed to perfection, from the best vocalist in in death metal! The low guitar tone makes this perfect, making the sound even more menacing, which is just the sound that death metal should be, and the heaviness is just right, maintaining a relentless and incredible sadistic atmosphere.

It has some great guitar shredding aswel, the short mini solo's are excellent, and with insane drumming throughout, and with real headbangable riffs! Although many would say the riffs plod on a bit, which I suppose they do because this is pure old school, nothing too technical here, and that is no problem for me.

Fantastic death metal!

I first didn't like the vocals - but now, after listening to more death metal albums, I've realized that Obituary's vocalist has a pretty unique style here.
In addition, James Murphy's guitar solos are very entertaining! And the low rhythm guitar tone and the overall production create this dark yet very relaxing atmosphere - a mesmerizing experience! As an added bonus, the cover art is also superbly haunting !

My favorite tracks are "Infected" (amazingly atmospheric opening), "Body Bag", "Dying" (great instrumental section), the title track, and "Turned Inside Out" (super soloing there).

This album is yet another example of why 1990 is my favorite year of metal releases: Painkiller, Rust in Peace, Spiritual Healing (also with James Murphy!), Seasons in the Abyss, By Inheritance, Coma of Souls, Left Hand Path, Hammerheart, Cowboys from Hell,.... and Cause of Death!

I've come to the conclusion that this (after Death's albums) is my favorite old school death metal album of the period '88 to '91.

The crushing riffs, the evil vocals, the elegant guitar solos, ... it doesn't get any better than this!

Edit (June 2022): it turns out it does get better than this! See Autopsy's Severed Survival

I prefer Slowly We Rot personally but their first three albums are early DM staples.
