>> Special Meet & Greet With Avantasia At W:O:A 2008 <<
Organizers of Germany's Wacken Open Air have issued the following update:
"To celebrate the release of Avantasia's upcoming record "The Scarecrow" and their appearance as a headliner at Wacken Open-Air 2008, Nuclear Blast Records and the Wacken team give you the unique opportunity to meet Avantasia mastermind Tobias Sammet in a special Meet & Greet at the festival itself.
What do you have to do? Just answer the questions here and with some luck, you (plus one person of your choice) will attend the Wacken Open-Air! Your travel costs and two Wacken Open-Air tickets will be supplied by Nuclear Blast Records and ICS Festival Service!"

lol. Tobi did a meet and greet this year. I could have probably met him backstage some time but watching bands is the most important thing at Wacken

And a ridiculous amount of people would say that watching bands is the least important thing at Wacken. That's the kind of people who pay those 100 bucks, are totally wasted for five days straight, don't manage to catch one band and decide to come back next year. You and most people here are from abroad, you'd never pay for this if it wasn't for the bands, but a stunning amount of people from Germany just go there for the party and to meet people you don't meet anywhere else than on festivals. It's actually quite funny how I meet some friends of mine who only live two miles away from my old home three times a year, but only at festivals somewhere in the republic

I truly doubt that since most of the bands at Wacken can be seen almost every year everywhere (except for the one or two one off reunion shows at Wacken) and the ridiculously large number of people present prevent you from seeing a band well. Festivals in general aren't about the bands playing but about the socializing aspect. Why else would you risk the chance of getting soaked to the bone with rain.
For me festivals are sometimes about a few bands, most bands only for 50% and the rest just socializing and networking.

well the thing about festivals is you get what you want out of it
if you want the bands out of it, then go and watch them - if you want the socialising apect of it then go and talk to a bunch of people
there isn't a universal set priority at festivals

I see your point. But just look at all the people at festivals... most are certainly there for the socializing aspect (you can'd deny that)

well I don't deny that there is an aspect of socialising at festivals, but if it was entirely about that - you could organise a meeting in a field with no bands
we should do some kind of survey to find out, but I would have thought most people going to a metal festival would be for the metal bands
people go for a mix of both, there isn't one right or wrong answer

Going to a festival is all about the atmosphere and having fun, most of the time combined with the good music!! If you can't stand rain or sleeping in a tent with a never ending noise all around you, well then festivals aren't your thing IMO (unless you have your house right next to it). The atmosphere on a festival is just incredible, especially when there are only a few kinds of music genres. Of course there's always a band you want to see, but festivals are all about having fun and atmosphere. Sure, it's quite hard and very tiring, but we aren't wuss'es and in the end it's totally worth it.
For me going to a big open air festival means to see some bands I definitely want to see, discovering a few new bands, but most of all enjoying myself (and this doesn't necessarily mean being hammered all the time...).
And, dude, being soaked to the bone while watching a class band on main stage rules (because it's all part of the atmopshere and part of the festival).
Festivals are a (metal) adventure!

Interesting new addition: Headhunter reunited just recently and will play at Wacken. Does anyone here still remember them?

Yeah, Axel Rudi Pell is also pretty good stuff. I was a pretty big fan when I was a bit younger. And about Van Canto.. I didn't really know them, so I searched for some samples and I really thought it sounded strange at first, but it is a pretty impressive band with only a drummer and 5 vocalists. I might be going to see them on Wacken.

Ok, so far the line-up is pretty bad. I'm considering going to Wacken, but only if the MetalStorm meeting will be held there.
