I watched the show before I knew it was based on books but few months ago I started to read the first book (haven't had the chance to read anything besides study materials ever since) and I guess I'm glad I already knew what all characters look like. anyway, recently I spotted the other four books in a bookstore and I think I'll make an exception and buy them (I rarely buy fiction books as I just read them once and then put away, so what's the point of that?)... winter's the coolest season for reading books.

plus, if one's worrying about the language... well, um, practice makes perfect, right? reading books is one of the best ways how to improve your knowledge in any language.

For a school project, does anyone know of American T.V. series that are based on specifically American values?

American values of what?
If its family values, then your best choice: Modern Family, just the first Season. And you will have a good time watching it too.

American Dad? South Park?
Don't know of any that cover those thing seriously, though.

Doesn't have to be serious at all. For example in Bing Bang Theory, there is not a single hint on abortion, vaccination which are scientifically approved but culturally no for conservatives. It's a no-no talk at all in the series. Or look at how having a family, a faithful wife in How I met Your Mother is the underlying story line...

i'm confused? do you think conservatives against vaccination? everyone pretty much universally supports vaccinations, aside from people who follow the same church as that Oprah-couch jumping actor lunatic.

anti-abortion? it's merely a split camp, with "WOMEN'S RIGHTS!" on one side, "IT"S A CHILD, NOT A CHOICE" on the other. neither side is a distinctly American value, it's a personal choice for either belief. and for that reason alone, for a lot of shows it's a third rail. if you have an episode where a female character makes a decision either way, you run the risk of alienating the fans on the other side of the issue. great for serious shows looking to spark debate/discussion (or heavy handed fucking shows preaching at the audience), but bad for light-hearted sitcoms looking for ratings.

underlying HIMYM is just "I had a good wife" story for the kids as nothing more than a strand to string the episodes on. watched most the series and don't recall much of anything about the unknown spouse being faithful. Dude loved his wife.

as far as equality, democracy, property rights, might want to watch Parks & Rec.

Female lead, aspiring politician, worships Hillary (fighting off urge to vomit in my mouth), but holds all females who have excelled in governmental politics in esteem, including Condoleezza Rice, showing a willingness to respect across the aisle... something you don't see in politics now, unfortunately. loves Government.

Ron Swanson - her boss represents Libertarian values, the American 3rd party... one huge on personal freedoms and property rights. one who dislikes Government. one of the best sitcom characters in ages.

Rest of the cast are a bit over the map and varied.

But South Park is probably the best one overall. Not because it's super representative of American values, but it's the only show that really "goes there" in taking it to both sides of any issue. They'll say what no one else has the balls to and don't care if they offend everyone to impart some wisdom on the audience.

Okay, I had in my mind to mention South Park/Family Guy/American Dad, then dropped the idea seeing she wants for project. May be she will paraphrase or quote to avoid plagiarism so i didnt mention anyone of those.

As Bitter said, all these shows represents true American values in very caustic way to make it funny and give solutions over issues cropped in.

HIMYM no matter how hard they try to be a creative series will always be carbon copy of Friends. The framework of the sitcom is poory developed and the only saving grace is some "good liners".

I'm reading some books on conservatism in America. They explained that conservatives appeared by Reagan's cultural revolution during his presidency. According to them the pillars of conservatism in America include democracy, equality, property right, liberty of religion and so on... But the discussions over abortion, homosexuality and family values are also in their interest. Based on what I read on these books I concluded that yeah vaccination might be also what conservatives would not approve but it's only my assumption; it is not that I found a proof for my thesis. Anyway, I see that having a family life in American cinema is always promoted and emphasized the same as being a faithful wife no matter what happens like how the story goes on in True Detective... Just mind you that I'm only in the process of reading studying on these thoughts, my arguments are not persuasive enough yet.

BTW, thank you for the complete answer and explanation. I really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks a lot.

Was originally an English TV series over here. It was quite popular I think and then the US took the idea who adapted it for an American audience. No idea how good or popular it was, but at a glance it seems to have fared better than most of the US's butchered attempts as UK comedy shows.

I am not much of a horror movie guy as I don't think they have much redeeming value especially watching alone. I did watch the 3 Paranormal activity movie solo though but it was quite fun as it was something of a revolutionary take on the genre or something. Will definitely watch this sometime soon.
