It seems that something like that must have happened eventually. Mike Portnoy is gone, and A Dramatic Turn of Events is the first occasion for the metal community to find out how Dream Theater fares without their co-founder and co-leader. Let me tell you straight away that it sucks. It sucks much more than I feared it would having heard the first song off the album, whose name I won't even bother to mention. Why would I want to waste time typing names of crappy songs?

There is no denying Dream Theater has been an enormous influence on progressive music for the last two decades. Every new release of theirs usually generates a buzz among fans and media alike. But since founding member, natural leader and revered drummer Mike Portnoy left the band unceremoniously last year, the free press the band is getting has been off the charts. After an overly publicized series of auditions whence drumming instructor Mike Mangini came triumphant, expectations were at an expected all-time high. A lot of doubts and uncertainties were lingering in the air. So what? You ask. Well, it all depends who's giving you the answer. Reviews have been split across the internet spectrum. But since you're stuck with me, here are my thoughts.

Dream Theater is my favorite band. They've been for a while now. However, a lot of people classify their music as mindless wankery and dislike them because of that, and while it's true that their 2000's releases to some extent fall in that category, for a long time I never really could understand what made that so unappealing to some. However, after hearing this album, I instantly knew what they meant. Following the pretty good Black Clouds And Silver Linings, which was a huge step up from the very mixed Systematic Chaos and Octavarium, it seemed like everything was going great again for Dream Theater. However, the departure of founding member Mike Portnoy left them in quite a weird spot; he had been one of the lead writers for two decades and was one of the pillars behind their success. The band now had to prove themselves capable of writing great stuff without him, using their new drummer Mike Mangini. And I'm gonna be honest, they did anything but succeed.

I hope this will be followed by some sort of a return to form. Probably not a 9-10 like back in the day. But some 8-8.5 would be nice. At least that's what I hope for - an actually good album.

Two labums later, we're yet to see your hopes become reality.

Well, the general rating for this album (and the mixed viewpoints of the users) just reflects how the opinions nowadays for an album are so divided. Some people will like an album and some other ones will loathe it.

In my particular case, I enjoy so much this album. Indeed this is their most melodic one, and I love every song in it.

Just to say, for myself is very influenced by Images & Words and Metropolis II (the reason why Portnoy said this album was "the band getting backwards into the past" in a negative view from himself).

Favorite songs: Breaking All Illusions & On The Backs Of Angels.

I really like this album a lot. The ballads don't do it for me but the rest is fantastic. Very underrated. I hated this at first but I came around when I actually gave it a chance.

Sometimes I think I was a bit too harsh towards this album, and then I listen to it again and realize I might have been to nice with it

one of my least favorites from DT, although still listenable, Breaking All illusions is the only song I would call "great".
4 would be too harsh, Not bad, not great album. I wouldn't know how to rate it. If I made a DT list, it would be bottom 5 definitely.

"Breaking All Illusions" is my favorite as well, but I think it has too many ideas and exploits almost none of them in a meaningful way and just ends up feeling bloated. If this album has only been "Breaking All Illusions", "Outcry", "Lost Not Forgotten" and "Bridges In The Sky", it would be a perfectly fine 6-ish/10 album, but the other songs bring it down so low...
It's definitely one of my least favorite DT albums, although I'd probably rank The Astonishing and Systematic Chaos lower.

I agree on the last sentence you wrote there. Systematic Chaos is a chore to listen, a big show-off of an album (like it was still necessary to display all that skill, just make an album that flows). I call the other album The UnAstonishing, should say how I feel about it.

I bought ADToE when it came out, but then I bought most DT albums. I'm glad I didn't buy The UnAstonishing though, I listened to it and gave it a hard pass. I'd probably got mad (to put it mildly ).

Hell yeah, exactly how I feel too! The "Bridges In The Sky" chorus is breathtaking.

Anyone ever notice On The Backs Of Angels has a very similar structure to Pull Me Under?
