"Crushing Infants' Skulls". That's what you'll find listed on the band's Facebook page under their influences. Their MySpace biography is basically a giant middle finger to just about everybody in the world; and this, the band's full-length debut, is a perfect reflection of their beliefs.
Legions Of Crows immediately sets out to castrate you, and subsequently strip you of your internal organs with an array of rusty screwdrivers and a Japanese backsaw. Stab Me is the musical equivalent to the Saw series: it's an elaborate excuse to feature gory and often disturbing scenarios with a twist here and there to make the general audience take it for a "psychological" thriller.
Let's be honest here, this band is pure thriller, no mind-fuck, and that's most likely just the way they want you to think of them.
You'll probably think of Forgotten Tomb when a reviewer throws around "blackened doom", but FG is nowhere near this kind of putridity. Think of a sound generally influenced by "War Pigs" with Burzum-esque production values, a caveman strung out on meth trying to imitate Chris Barnes, and the general psychotic chaos of Benighted. That's not to mention Attila's vocals, which are undeniably a make-it-or-break-it ingredient, as some will undoubtedly write this off due to the naturally abrasive approach of his grimy shrieks. The guest vocalists - who balance these shrieks with some clean vocals - do a great job of limiting the crazy and sticking to the job at hand, but even that can't help this album from being disjointed.
Once again, doom opens its doors to something completely off-the-wall, something psychedelic, brutal, melancholic, and chaotic. Fans of "weird" music in general ought to check this out, even if only for a momentary high.
