Opeth still haven't quite nailed their prog rock sound, but they're getting closer.

Don't listen to metal. Listen to music. You'll love this album if you do.

i just cant get over what they used to be...

Try thinking of it as a completely separate band, leave the weight of expectation.

Been watching some reaction videos and I have to say that the Swedish version is a better vocal performance and the better lyrics as well. English takes the edge off of both. Too bad they will likely have to perform all the songs in English for 90% of their audiences.

Obviously something is happening with opeth ... We know of great groups that have gone through such a "slimy" period of their careers. Paradise Lost were lost with industrial moments, but later returned to the real doom. I hope they return to the bosom of progressive-melodic death metal

I thought I'd never enjoy later Opeth, but the other week my girlfriend (who doesn't listen to metal) asked me if I enjoyed Allting tar slut with Opeth, and I didn't even know of it. I listened to it a couple of times, and realized it's an insanely good song, so now I've been spinning this record a couple of times daily, and I must admit it is actually really good! Not the same as earlier Opeth (and I would say that I generally prefer older Opeth), but sometimes this style fits my mood better than the older. I look forward to diving into their other prog-area records now!

Go ahead, enjoy.
Edit: Seriously, I did enjoy large parts of Heritage.

She chose the best song from the album to sell it to you with IMO, All Things Shall Pass is definitely my favourite from the album. As far as their other prog rock stuff goes, I think ICV and Pale Communion are clearly a level above Heritage, which is stronger than Sorceress, but you may end up disagreeing

Ah, finally got through Opeth. Still at 36 years old, they are too boring for me. Must be 10 years since I last got to them and not much changed. Only thing that changed is that I must say I do get why they are so highly praised, it is quality music, but progressive music is just not that interesting. Good luck listening to this in car where even something like Nightwish can get boring, I listened to them at work.
And I mean even their metal years, these rock years can bore you to death.
I'm just glad my next band is Amon Amarth.

With their new album just around the corner, I gave his album another spin. It's a good, not great album. Enjoyable, but not mind blowing. Mostly mellow, satisfying prog. I'll continue to enjoy it for what it is.
