I’ve spoken before about my trepidation when bands release self-titled records late into their career. Based on my theory for self-titled albums in the Lamb Of God reviews, Kalmah isn’t the start of a new era for the band that shares its name, but thankfully it isn’t a harbinger of decline for the group either; this is just a damn good record.

Even not old Kalmah, but still this is decent album, more somehow to roots whit new vibes and inspirations, I enjoy it, not bad att all, sad tittle suggest it might be last one, but I hope band will record their 10th.,

Not to hate on the last album, Palo, but this one completely blows it out of the swampwater!

This is insanely melodic, it's such great fun, maybe not their best in terms of songwriting, but it's probably their most enjoyable release of all for me

I liked the singles they released previous to the album. The cymbals sounded a bit weird to me, but I was so hyped for this record anyway. After being a fan of the band for arround 15 years, I wasn't expecting their 9th album to become my favourite from them, but damn, this thing is so freaking good. I don't know if they chose it to be their self-titled album for some reason. To me, it seemed like a statement, "this is us, Kalmah in it's purest form". What an amazing day, Vomitory and Kalmah both launched their 9th album and they're both amazing.

Damn what an album.

It's easily the best of their last 3 albums, maybe not quite as well written as some albums before that but thoroughly solid. Surprisingly I like the slower songs the most because they're so well executed. On some songs I wish the production was a little cleaner but that almost seems inappropriate to ask of an album that was pulled straight from the swamp. There are so many great riffs and melodies mixed in harsh heavy layers that I can't help but love this. Kalmah remains a group of melodeath masters.

My favorites tracks were No Words Sad Enough, Drifting In A Dream, and Tons Of Chaos, but there are no weak songs here.

I didn't care much for the first two singles but Taken Before Given really got me interested. As a whole it's pretty strong album. I liked the slower songs too.

I've never listened to Kalmah and I can't even name an album or a song. This album came as a suggestion on YouTube so I clicked on it. I must say that I was positively surprised. Might check out their older stuff too if I get the time for it.

Their first few albums are better than this one, IMO. The melodies on something like Swampsong are a bit less saccharine to my ears. This is still a very good album, but I think you'll enjoy the older Kalmah albums at least as much as this one and I definitely dare to recommend the first four if you liked this.

I echo Metren by saying that you should check out at least the first 3 albums. i remember Kalmah got a lot of shit by some people for being " too close to Children Of Bodom" but honestly I was always more into Kalmah than COB. Kalmah has less of a rocking vibe and feels a tad more extreme. At least in the first albums. Their melodies are so on point.

Never listened to COB either. But I'll trust you and Metren on Kalmah so I'm going to check their previous work too.

I am biased because I absolutely adore this band. Might sit at the top of the list of my favorite bands. That being said, being 30 years deep into their carrer, and still having this high a level of energy, and a good sense for memorable melodies is really impressive. This album is better than "Palo" in my opinion, and sits well within their discography (earlier albums being untouchable of course). "Serve the Untrue", "Home Sweet Hell"' and "Red and Black" are my favorite songs, and shoutout to the slower songs which also rocks.

Since 12 gauge there have been few rehash attempts, some obvious and some done tastefully but !2 Gauge was such a perfect post prime kalmah sound That I would much prefer they stayed with that.

Hearing some Omnium Gatherum in certain songs, which I've not really picked up when listening to them before

It's just a very good solid record, Kalmah are a band that I've only occasionally dipped into but they're pretty reliably enjoyable

A very strong outing again. Maybe not quite up there with They Will Return etc., but there's some great stuff on here. I like the singles much more in the context of the album.

Criminally underexposed band compared to Bodom and a lot more consistent.

This album sounds fantastic, like it was composed back in early 200s, really sounds like in between Swamplord and The Black Waltz. I wonder what was the reason getting back to the roots? I wish they put a bit more screams versus harsh vocals into that record. However can't stop listening to that one, every song is my favorite! MS pleas allow me to rate it 15, basically 1.5 for each song.

Really cant hear any OG here.... just more or less bits of Swamplord - The Black Waltz era.

Cannot even compare it with their first albums, but found some great melodies in this. "Red And Black" was great and "No Words Sad Enough" / "Taken Before Given" were of some interest.

Listened once, brilliant album! Thought the production was harsh at first, but when I got used to it, it kindof fitted. Veil of Sin has a The Black Waltz feeling to it, No Words Sad Enough a surprisingly nice track, and Serve The Untrue made me think of Heroes to Us. Might be the best since 12 Gauge!

First time hearing Kalmah too. Reading the comments I don't think this album is representative of their discography. More than the music what I really recall of the album is its odd sound, with a lot of mids and compressed cymbals. Well it's intriguing but I like it. I'll have to give further listens to recall the songs more.

Kalmah still have that early 2000's Finnish melodeath guitar wizardry thing going stronk. This is a highly entertaining album.
