Chat Pile

Chat Pile are really really good at making music that feels like the embodiment of societal despair. Things are perfectly fine in the world right now so surely music this anxiety inducing can never feel cathartic. We've sung their praises again and again, so I was really curious to hear more about how all of it comes to life. Somehow we manage to avoid talking about the state of the world too much, and for a couple of minutes we could pretend that the worst thing in the world are those Emilia Pérez nominations at the Oscars.

You now have two obligatory questions to ask: which living director would they choose and which song they would have had David Lynch direct a video for. Life must evolve and art must go on.

This was a lot of fun. Super relaxed, very friendly and upbeat (having taken as read everything that Cool World is about and everything else we've got going on now). It felt like you didn't even have that many questions to ask; it was just a nice hangout. One of the joys of doing/watching interviews with metal bands (or even bands that are not metal enough to be on the Metal Archives) is seeing them be totally the opposite of the music they play.

Mr. "I don't know anything about Oklahoma" apparently knows all of the important Oklahoma facts already. There are only two other important things to know about Oklahoma: this and this.

I would say I am more on the Stin/Ron side in terms of movies; I go to see a decent amount of new stuff during the year, but the vast majority of my viewing is older, and by the end of the year I've usually seen only a fraction of the stuff that gets nominated for Oscars. The Academy and I value very different things both in individual films and in cinema as a whole, so I don't pay any attention to the ceremonies and the Academy has about as much influence over my experience in film as the Grammys do over my experience in music. I'm selectively invested, basically - stuff like Parasite winning Best Picture and Ke Huy Quan's acceptance speech is very moving and meaningful, I'm dreaming of Martin Scorsese living another ten years so he can beat William Wyler's record for most Best Director nominations, but otherwise I don't care and I couldn't tell you who or what is up this year. Furiosa was incredible, though. Easy top five of 2024. They should put a statue of George Miller outside the Academy museum and crash cars into it every hour. If the Hollywood sign burns away, they should replace it with a giant V8 Interceptor.

I feel like I should have more to say about Chat Pile than about the Oscars. I guess I need to go listen to Remove Your Skin Please now.
