Vola are sticking rigidly to their 3-year album cycles, and Friend Of A Phantom arrives with the same regularity as its predecessors; it also comes with a regularity in style that's slightly surprising considering the band’s evolution up to this point.

On first listen, it's kinda what I expected, although perhaps I thought there might be even more curveball tracks such as These Black Claws from the last album - this is arguably a bit of a 'safe' record. Not that I'm complaining, though, it has that inviting warmth that you anticipate from Vola when they're on form. I can't see it overtaking Applause From A Distant Crowd as my top album from them, but I'll be interested to see whether I find myself preferring it to Witness after a few more spins.

This is an elevated cocktail of all previous albums…the djent elements of the first, the moody-chilled atmosphere of the second and the alternative tendencies of the third. Looking forward seeing them performing these songs live.

What a beautiful album! This is Vola at their best! I can agree with previous comments that its kind of ”safe”. But when its this good it doesnt really matter imo!

Great album! I still think Witness is their best. This needed one more great song to be excellent

Not on the level of Applause from a Distant Crowd but I prefer it to Witness. Good album, nothing super special but it’ll get a few more spins for sure

The songs are built to be earworms. The album does decline a bit in quality towards the end but the first two-thirds are so solid that it makes up for this.
