Ever wondered what would happen if you crossed the symphonies of Nightwish with a brutal death metal style? Well here's your answer; Fleshgod Apocalypse have gone from being one of the best underground death metal bands to one of the most over the top, symphonic and flamboyant death metal bands there are.

Now under the wing of Nuclear Blast, these Italian connoisseurs of classically influenced death metal have taken their previously crafted brand of brutal death metal and cranked every element up to eleven. Much more symphonic than the band's previous offerings, Agony is a brutal blend of death metal mashed together with the symphonies you would expect to hear from bands like Dimmu Borgir. The band are still technically phenomenal, the drums especially are lightning-fast and precise. The violent death metal outbursts have not been compromised here, but they have been coupled together with vast, bombastic symphonic passages that at times are face-meltingly colourful and exquisite, see "The Betrayal" and "The Violation".

Isn't it a little unfair to rate an album by pitting it against other albums?

While I definitely think this is an excellent album, a band's fan base can't help but compare a new release to previous material. I loved the debut and the EP, and I kept both in mind when giving this a spin for the first time. If anything, it actually helped me appreciate Agony even more.

Agreed, I also listened to the previous two albums again and I find Agony a perfect progression.

I expected more from this album, they had a nice idea, but I don't like the way they put it all together.
Orchestral parts are amazing at some parts, I must admit, but... the clean vocals are terrible, is somebody torturing him or what :S
I really wanted to give it a higher mark, since I can't wait for more orchestral death albums. It's still fine, but they should learn a few things from Septic Flesh. The Great Mass slays this big time.

I found The Great Mass to be exceptional, because there was a lot more experimentation with the composition from Septicflesh's side - the focal
point of the record lay entirely in the combining of different styles of music, not just metal and the maturity of the band was very evident in the
end product.
The Agony on the other hand is a really tight record, and a great 'next step' for Fleshgod Apocalypse - I look forward to their future releases.

If you wish to compare the two records, that's fine and you're entitled to such an opinion - I just feel that the two albums
are different even though the 'genre style' may be similar.

I suggest getting some better speakers or EQ'ing the ones you have, I can hear every single guitar part well enough to play along with them. I'll agree with you on the bass. Oh well, I suppose I should have known this would upset the purists.

I am in no way a purist. If I were a purist I think I would hate on their previous albums as well. I would most likely despise the new Septicflesh era aswell, but Communion and The Great Mass are some of my favorites of all time. In fact, I would probably not like anything after the year 1995 or something silly like that. And also, I listen to a few deathcore bands like BoO and VoM. So my views are certainly not that of a purist. It is merely my opinion that this new direction they've taken is a bit crap. You can't really be objective when it comes to something like this, it's totally a love it or hate it affair.

And it worked quite well. 6 people have voted this a 1. That brings it's score from an 8.68 (its rating if the 1's are taken out) to an 8.3.

If no one had voted this a 1, it still would be no. 1!!

Some people may be trolling SF fanboys, others might simply be disgusted with this album. And while voting it a 1 because of of the Top 2011 throne is retarded, I can't say I blame the people who are genuinely repulsed by this album to the extent of giving it the lowest score possible.

Stop being so hard on everything. For me, and if you look at the reting system, 7 and over means GOOD. People who give this album a 4-6... I completely understand. It isn't a masterpiece, it can be quite boring and repetive, but I somehow find it listenable. Not every song, but it has it's moments.
Sincerely, a Septic Flesh fanboy.
BTW, if you give this a 1, your just being a dick. But 4, yeah, that's completely understandable.

A few more listens and this could replace Gallhammer's The End as my favorite album for 2011. And which member does the high singing? Sounds a bit like someone's standing on his balls.

It has a couple of realy good songs, like The Deceit and The Violation, but i think it gets repetitive gitarwise and the clean vocals sounds cool somtimes, but the guy is not a very good singer. everybody can scream high notes:)
One hell of a drummer though, and the symphonic ellement i like

I find that this is a decent album, but the synth and the drums seem to dround the other parts out like the singing or the guitar or the bass unless you are only trying to listen to that or you turn the bass and treble up really high

The singing doesn't bother you? Do you like it more than Oracles? I might have to listen to this again.
