SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

I have greater problems with a subgroup of the aforementioned that brings aggression and brutality to a festival. That is what will keep me from going to Wacken one day.

You mean to say Wacken attracts people who attend it just so they can fuck about in an aggressive manner? Thereby spoling it all for the other people? Now that is incredibly sad. A festival should of course be a gathering for like-minded people and not a ventialation for aggression. Those agressive idiots do they really consider themselves metalheads? My God what is this world coming to when one goes to a festival (or any other concert) just to fight and be aggressive and spoil other people's fun.

Yep, that's what I mean to say. But that phenomenon is not limited to the WOA, I've seen it on many concerts too. The younger the audience, the more of an identity crisis they seem to have and the more they seen to think enjoying a concert is cooler when you regardlessly mosh instead of listening or even just headbanging. I'm not that much of a fan of body contact with strangers, especially if it's violent contact but it's getting increasingly hard to find a good spot in the audience on a concert without these people around. Or maybe I'm listening to the wrong bands. But looking at close to 8 years of concert experience I assert that it's the people who change. A couple of years ago I've seen Nevermore in Hamburg and the concert was so intimate that everyone in the room seemed to feel the same feelings. At that day, Dew Scented was one of the openers and they repeatedly tried to get people to form a moshpit but nobody wanted to. They were there to enjoy the music, each guy for himself but still all of them together.
Nowadays, on a Nevermore (or even an Opeth) concert you have at least a fifth of the people moshing and making the area right in front of the stage unbearable for the rest of the audience. And I can't even tell you about the appearance of Amon Amarth at the WOA. And as much as I hate to say it, great part of the Nevermore show were destroyed for me too. Not only because one guy knocked me unconscious, but through the whole show we were more preoccupied with surviving the crowd we were in than acutally enjoying the music.

I guess you just have to pick the right area to stand as well. People don't tend to try and start moshpits at the sides. You can usually get much closer to the front going from the sides as well.
