Sonisphere Bulgaria - Festival Cancelled
SofiaEcho.com is reporting that the Bulgarian edition of the Sonisphere festival has officially been cancelled. The line-up included names such as Iron Maiden, Slipknot, Alice Cooper, Mastodon and Apocalyptica.
Balkan Entertainment, the promoters of the festival released the following statement: "Due to reasons outside Balkan Entertainment's control and at the instruction of the licence-holder for Sonisphere in Bulgaria, the Sonisphere Bulgaria 2011 festival, planned for June 21th at the National Hippodrome in Bankya, is cancelled."
The festival was dealt a blow on June 9 when one of the event's two headliners, Slipknot, said that the promoters cancelled the show, an allegation that Balkan Entertainment denied. Instead, Slipknot announced a special headline show at Columbiahalle in Berlin on the same date when Sonisphere Bulgaria was to be held.
Balkan Entertainment's Petar Petrov told Z-Rock radio station that the promoters were unpleasantly surprised by the news and that the company did not cancel Slipknot's gig.
Sonisphere Bulgaria 2011 has come under some criticism for the chosen location - the racecourse on the outskirts of Sofia versus the Vassil Levski national stadium in central Sofia in 2010 - and the higher prices.

Iced Earth - Reveal New Album Title
Iced Earth have set Dystopia as the title of their forthcoming new studio album, tentatively due before the end of the year through Century Media Records.
Iced Earth mainman Jon Schaffer checked in with the following message: "Just a quick update for you from the road. We had a great weekend playing at Sweden Rock Friday and the Rock Hard festival in Germany on Saturday. The band's having a lot of fun, and today we begin rehearsing the new songs for the forthcoming CD, titled Dystopia. We begin master tracking in Florida in 2 weeks and will be traveling between Europe and the US this summer to play festivals and finish the new album. I can honestly say that I haven't had this many songs give me goose bumps since we recorded Something Wicked This Way Comes, way back in 1998, so this is also very exciting.
As you can imagine, it's a very busy time for us. I think we're all having emotional ups and downs as we're coming to the end of an era with Matt's retirement, and we're also very excited about the future with Stu coming onboard, so it's a little bit of a roller coaster ride for us. However, we are having a killer time, and Matt is performing at his absolute best and going out with pure class and style, which is always the way he rolls."
Matt Barlow will retire from the band after the summer festival shows. Afterwards Into Eternity vocalist Stu Block will become the new lead singer for Iced Earth. Dystopia will mark the studio debut of Block together with the band.

Korn - Update On New Dubstep Album
More good news from the Korn camp. After their collaboration single with hotter-than-hot Los Angeles dubstep DJ Skrillex, Korn are planning to release a dubstep studio album, expected to dominate the charts later this year.
Speaking to NME this weekend, Korn bassist Fieldy said the band was almost finished with the follow-up to 2010's Korn III: Remember Who You Are: "We've collaborated with six, maybe seven dubstep producers on the new record. I've done my parts, I think Jonathan Davis has a couple of vocal takes still to do, but it's almost done."
These dubstep producers/DJ includes such names as Kill The Noise, Excision, Skillets and 12th Planet.
Fieldy also said Jonathan Davis is responsible for inspiring the band's new dubstep direction. "Jonathan loved it," he said, "and he just got us into it." He added that the band felt it "was important to stay current and keep on top of what's going on."
In the meantime, check out Korn's collaboration single "Get Up" featuring Skrillex below.

Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mars Volta - Members Form New Group
Noisecreep is reporting that Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds is working on an as-yet-unnamed new project with The Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, former The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen and ex-Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery.
Since the members of the project live on opposite sides of the country, progress been a bit slow. "We tried to get together and do an album, but there's been no time," Hinds recently told Noisecreep. "We want to record crazy stuff and Ben is working on that, but it's been hard to get together."
Even though the project is officially nameless, Hinds wants to call it Giraffe Tongue "because they look sick."
Hinds is also hard at work promoting his Fiend Without a Face and West End Motel projects, as well as recording a new Mastodon album, called The Hunter.

Anal Cunt - Frontman Passed Away
Anal Cunt's publicist, Kim Kelly of Catharsis PR, has confirmed via Twitter that the band's charismatic frontman, Seth Putnam, died yesterday, Saturday, June 11th of a suspected heart attack. He was 43 years old.
Commented Kelly: "Yes, it's true. Seth Putnam, one of the most infamous musicians that extreme metal has ever seen, the grindcore GG Allin, has passed away due to a heart attack.
I handled all the promotion for Anal Cunt's last album, Fuckin' A, and Seth was always happy to oblige any request I sent his way. The band had been working on a new album before his passing, so chances are his musical career's epitaph has yet to be inscribed.
I want to remind everyone that no matter how outrageous and controversial his musical career has been, Seth was still a human being with friends and family that loved him. I'm hoping that the Internet will remember that. This is a very sad and trying time for those that knew him, and the last thing they need to see is an outpouring of message board hate. The man lived and died by his own rules; if anything, respect him for that."

On October 12, 2004, Putnam was hospitalized after ingesting two months' worth of Ambien sleeping pills. It was reported that he spent the previous day contemplating suicide, although exact circumstances surrounding the drug overdose are vague.
Putnam's reaction to the irony of his having been in a coma after previously writing the song "You're In A Coma" was published in the Boston Phoenix. Quoted Putnam: "Actually, it turned out it was just as gay as the song I wrote nine years ago ? being in a coma was just as fuckin' stupid as I wrote it was."

Cynic - Making Progress On Upcoming Album
Cynic are still busy working on writing new material. Guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal issued the following update on the forthcoming release:
"I've been working away in the home studio writing lots of new songs and keeping off the grid to stay creatively focused. Apologies for having been a bit reclusive in our digital age of informational abundance! It's safe to say that Cynic already has plenty of material for a new record, but something keeps the inspiration going to write more. I feel like I'm on for the ride and just seeing what manifests as a result of sitting on the train and looking out the window. As we move further along and closer to 'destination recording', the album will start to shape itself and the appropriate songs will be chosen.
We're looking at late summer/early fall to enter the studio. At the moment, I have no idea when the record will be released. Maybe later this year or early next. We're also in communication with lots of fantastic new musicians who will be involved. I can already sense this next album is going to take our listeners on a whole new sonic adventure that words cannot yet describe. I say this because the work is feeling based and there's a lot of life poured into these embryos that will speak for themselves when heard.
I'm always amazed at how living life informs the art so directly and yet we have no power over it. The songs have a directness and urgency unlike anything we've done before due to a bountiful influx of concentrated life experiences. Thank the universe for the gift of music.
I am so absolutely grateful to be alive and to be able to share the potency and beauty of music with you. In the meantime keep spreading the love and thank you for taking this journey with us."

Charon - Calling It Quits This Summer
Finnish suomi metal band Charon are calling it a day after this summer's performances. The band, founded in 1992 in Raahe, Finland, will be playing their final gigs as a favour to their loyal fans and finally wrap up nearly two decades of music career.
A statement from the band explaining their long considered decision, reads as follows: "This shouldn't be a really big surprise for anyone. We are forced to admit that we have no longer anything new to give to the genre in which Charon has operated. Doing things forced or not straight from the heart has never been a band practice for us. And a 100 % satisfactory outcome would no longer be possible.

Corrosion Of Conformity - Update On The New Album
As reported back in February, the reunited Animosity line-up of Corrosion Of Conformity has entered the studio with long-time producer John Custer (Blind, Deliverance, Wiseblood, America's Volume Dealer, Arms Of God) to begin recording the band's new album tentatively due for a late 2011 release.
In a recent interview with UGO, bassist/vocalist Mike Dean told the following about the forthcoming album: "The title is yet to be determined. A self-titled release crossed our minds but the album title is a game-time decision. October is a good time but if we miss that, early 2012 would be a fine time for release. "The Moneychangers", "River Of Stone" and "Rat City" are some of the [song]titles."

Mastic Scum - New Album In The Works
Austrian grindcore act Mastic Scum are working on a new full-length album, tentatively due later this year.
The band issued the following update: "We are currently working on the new album! We are fucking excited about the new record which follows our last album, Dust, our strongest release up to date, of which we are very proud!! However, the new release will be for sure a progression from the songwriting and sound production points of view.
Some of the songwriting is already done, but we still have work to do! The new material so far is fucking brutal, combining shredding rhythms, mosh grooves and grindcore blast attacks! We sure give 100% in the songwriting process and we cannot wait to enjoy with everyone the new overdose of brutal distorted structures! Be prepared!!
As our goal is to enter the studio earliest in autumn 2011, we are very focused on our work and will play just a few live shows this summer/fall. Nevertheless, we really look forward to grind with you at our upcoming shows!"
