If you are unfamiliar with Obscura, the German combo plays an unfettered brand of progressive technical death metal similar in style to bands like Cynic, Gorod and Necrophagist. With three key members gone since their last opus Omnivium?Christian Münzner [guitars], Hannes Grossmann [drums] and Jeroen Paul Thesseling [bass] all left after 2011?the band had to be rebuilt.

I'm haunted by delusions that this might be excellent.

I think they call it optimism.

5 years are great to make an album with awesome ideas. i'd like them a bit more aggressive sound-wise and this will kill! Kummerer is a little genius IMO..

Definitely going to be interesting to see what the new line-up sounds like. I thought Omnivium was near perfect, but multiple departures and five years between records leaves a lot of room for evolution of sound.

Just compared both songs. Super similar song structure but the riffs are all completely different. There is no way that is a cover.

Tribute is probably a better word for it

I suppose quite a bit of it could be called a tribute, but there's a fair portion that's almost identical to the original song. Either way, they should have mentioned something.

Edit: by "cover" I meant they should acknowledge the band in some way. Obviously it's too dissimilar to be called a cover, but too similar to ignore.

I was worried about the lineup changes, especially from a songwriting perspective. I worry no longer. Enjoying this one more with each listen.

For an album that came several years and a couple of lineup changes since Omnivium, there is a lot of Omnivium present in this one. I love the Alkaloid record, but this one is awfully good, too. If the band splitting means we get twice as many good bands out of it, I guess it wasn't such a bad move after all.

Hmm, nicely executed, but devoid of what I would like to call soul. I just don't feel it man.

Definitely a homage to Death or at least Chuck. I think that's why it's a bonus track. It has identical riffs and solos to the ones in "Voice of the Soul", "Without Judgement" and possibly another but just changed up a bit.

It's pretty apparent and that's probably why they didn't give an acknowledgement. I immediately thought of Death when I heard it.

Must have been all the touring Steffen Kummerer did as the vocalist that rubbed off on him.

Count me in as one of those who had a lot of worries about this release as a result of the lineup changes. Still don't think this tops their past 2 albums for me, but seeing as those were two of my favorite releases in '09 and '11, that' is by no means supposed to come across as a negative statement. This album feels far more melodic than the past two, but still gives a really healthy dose of tech and prog elements. The production on this album is absolutely stellar, everything just sounds super crisp and clean. As expected, Linus is absolutely lights-out on this album and the sound of the bass in the mixing is top-notch.

I'm willing to call this my favorite album of the year so far, solely on how incredible "Perpetual Infinity" is. I need to listen to the whole album a few more times, but I'm really impressed so far.
