As usual we have very few picks in common, the only ones being System Of A Down, Opeth and Arch Enemy. 2001 was a goddamn good year, especially for prog and avantgarde with the aforementioned Opeth as well as Vuvr, Gojira and Transatlantic for prog, with on the other hand Carnival In Coal releasing the best avantgarde album ever made (absolutely objective statement, of course), Maudlin Of The Well unleashing their best two albums the same goddamn year and Sigh and Dog Fashion Disco both producing great albums as well. On the black metal front, you got really nice releases from Windir, Carpathian Forest, Summoning and Mütiilation, while the rest of metal didn't disappoint either with great stuff from Pig Destroyer and Forest Of Shadows among others. Overall a great year.

2001 is a decent year, you have somd good albums listed here, Tool Lateralus is a worthy number one I would also reccomend Windir 1184, that's one of my favourite releases of the year, aswel as Summoning Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame, I certainly reccomend that one.

Indeed! Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame is my favorite Summoning album!
Also, for this year I also liked Testament's First Strike Still Deadly - Great aggressive re-recordings of classic thrash!

These days, it's Neurosis' A Sun that Never Sets, Converge's Jane Doe, Shape of Despair's Angels of Distress, and aforementioned maudlin of the Well. In 2001, my favorites (was just discovering metal then) were Nightwish's Wishmaster, Sonata Arctica's Silence and Rammstein. Later in the 00s it would have been Opeth (BWP), Devin Townsend (Terria), Therion (Secret of the Runes), Finntroll (Jaktsens tid), Avantasia, and Ensiferum. Not sure which category to put Sigh in.
Funny to think about years in retrospect. I had no idea about any of the stuff I now consider the year's best, and even if I did, I wouldn't have liked them. (In actual fact though, the best album is Björk's Vespertine, followed probably by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and the Microphones.)

Very great year, the mentions could’ve just going and going. Seems like no matter what genre you’re into 2001 has you covered (even though I just noticed I didn’t mention any Death Metal releases for the first time since its creation ). Cheers some of those I intended to check out.

I considered listening to that one but I don’t see anything wrong with the originals and it’s not like they got a new singer like Anthrax did but if you say it’s worthy it I’ll check it out.

I tried to spread the love between what I like now and what I liked back then when I was just a Nu Metal kid but only had so much room for such a stacked year.
I wish I had listened to Converge - Jane Doe, I intend to understand Metalcore in the upcoming years and I hear that was an important album.
I usually try to include something non Metal too, I didn’t think to give Björk a go lol.

3. Windir - 1184
4. Silencer - Death - Pierce Me
5. Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
6. Opeth - Blackwater Park
7. Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin
8. Björk - Vespertine (art pop)
9. Venetian Snares - Doll Doll Doll (breakcore)
10. Skinless - Foreshadowing Our Demise
