I am asking this because I am currently a music technology student in training to become a studio engineer and record some metal bands as well as play in some. The purpose of this post is so that I can get an idea of what kinds of ways people prefer their metal and then use the right technology to get the best possible recordings for bands.

As for my answer, it depends on the genre/band. I prefer vinyl for doom, heavy metal, black metal, and some thrash. Cassettes are awesome in my opinion; I really enjoy them for thrash, death, and black metal in particular (also blues). CD's can be good or bad for anything, it all depends on the recording process and not as much the bands.

FLAC. Another reason why bandcamp kicks so much ass.

Mp3 for me, I like making a nice playlist on the spot, FLAC has better quality, but takes up too much space.

Mp3. Anything above 192k bitrate is absolutely fine for normal speakers and no difference in sound compared to 320k, FLAC or any other format.

I keep my mp3 file albums organized in MusicBee player which is best music organizing app on Windows with lots of customization.

I want my black and death metal analogue, preferably tapes or very crappy vinyl. The rotten sound quality only makes that kind of music more enjoyable. Once I found barely functional vinyl copy of Napalm Death and the authentic filth, noise and chaos was off the charts. It was great. Other than that it doesn't matter to me at all
