So not all Cobalt fans were really feeling the hype with Slow Forever, as Phil McSorely, the now former vocalist of the band, had backed out on the project. Apparently I read that there were some "personal differences" between Phil and Erik Wunder, the mastermind behind the band playing all the instruments. So who did Wunder replace Phil with? None other than Charlie Fell, who some may remember for his drumming in bands like Abigail Williams or his performance on vocals on Lord Mantis's Pervertor (fuckin' gnarly). So did they do a good job with this record? In my opinion, yes, they did.

Does it all sound a bit too samey for anyone else? :/

It does. There isn't much black metal here too but I quite like the confidence of this record and enjoyed it a lot. But it could've been a bit more varied for 83 minutes or they should've trimmed some of the songs.

I'm a huge fan... have been from day one... waited 7 years for this... it saddens for me to say that this is the weakest, laziest album thus far... makes me think was Phil the creative genius behind the band's success... as of right now ratings are at 6.5.... definitely better than that but still (as a fan)... a disappointment... get rid of the interludes and throw 3 more tracks with the intensity of "Hunt the Buffalo" and maybe then will it be doable... anyway I heard Phil was coming back for the next one... I'm guessing if that lie becomes truth then you will hear a totally different result... wishful thinking on my part...

It's been a while since I heard Gin, but this does sound pretty similar to how I remember that album. I think overall the individual songs are of fairly similar to those on that album, although some certainly fare better than others (Cold Breaker is clearly a stronger song than following track Elephant Graveyard), but it does have an unfortunate lack of diversity considering how long it is. Still a pretty satisfying listen though on the whole

Edit: really digging the later part of Final Will

I really like it, but agree trimming things down would have gone a long way. Went back to listen to Gun and Eater of Birds, and I actually prefer this to the former.

Charlie makes this record. If it were anyone else I probably wouldn't have cared. That being said, I do like this album very much, but I'm absolutely in love with Charlie's disgusting vocal vomit.

I guess I'm not surprised to see this in so many publication's end of year lists, but all they do is serve as a reminder that this is the let down of the year.

Yeah probably one of the few disappointments in what was the strongest year for black metal in recent times.

Get a grip man. This is boring stuff and has nothing on their earlier stuff. But yeah, maybe with shorter length it could have been better.

First listen (been doing some serious catching up) and I like it. Overall, the kind of album that makes you go "that was a good listen, although it's not amazing".

A bit long must say, and Elephant Graveyard has the same riff as Darkthrone's Checkmate Jesus Christ, but I think thats good, now I want to listen to Sardonic Wrath

Along with the last portal this is a serious contender for the biggest disappointment of 2010s. I wish they never had done it.

Listening to the whole thing for the first time. Back when it was released I only heard the tracks that were released as teasers. I knew I was going to buy it anyway.

I must say that giving it some years so I could cool off my expectations trully helped. I'm enjoying very moment of this album. It has a completely different character than the previous albums. It is a bit cleaner but I think it lifts up the songwriting and adventurous sound. It's almost like "road-trip" black metal. It's a vibe I really like.Charlie Was also the best possible replacement imo. His voice is at times almost identical but still different with his own sludgy touch. First track in particular he put his own spin. He sounded as if he was possessed in the desert.

Some tracks a re definitely slow burners but yeah... I can honestly say that I really liked it. Far from iconic as the previous two albums (which I listened to in full the past two days before getting into this one). But still a great listening and solidifies Cobalt's sound. I can't mention any band that sounds like the music Cobalt has played on their last 3 records.
