Some statistics for these 50 albums:
Statistics:
Countries:
USA = 13
Germany = 8
Sweden = 7
Australia = 3
UK = 3
Norway = 3
Finland = 3
Israel = 2
Poland = 2
Greece = 1
The Netherlands = 1
Denmark = 1
Belarus = 1
Iceland = 1
Portugal = 1
Years:
1970-1979: 0
1980 - 1989: 1
1990 - 1999: 12
2000 - 2009: 15
2010 - 2019: 8
2020 - 2023: 14
Genres:
Black & Folk = 17
Doom & Stoner = 11
Sludge = 6
Thrash = 5
Death = 5
Avant-garde = 3
Grindcore = 2
Gothic = 1
Conclusions:
I still get a large portion of my metal dosage from the US and Sweden. But, this year, I also delved more into music made in my home country of Germany. Similarly, while metal from the ‘90s remains a large source of entertainment for me, I've also focused more on exploring music from the early 2000s. Reviewing new albums and preparing for the MS Awards has also led to about a quarter of these top 50 albums being from 2023. In regards to my genre preference, the previous domination of death and black has given way to a clear favoring of black metal. I've also continued to enjoy more doom, stoner, sludge, and grindcore offerings. Traditional heavy metal is, in fact, nowhere to be found.

I am touched to see Rust in Peace on #10.
If you don’t mind the question, how often did you listen to the first and the last album on this list?

Patience, my friend! I'm indeed planning on writing a sequel to my "My Metal Journey So Far" article in June, which will feature many of these albums here too!

Wow, did you really keep track of your listening behavior in such a detail over the entire year that you are able to name the exact number of times you have spun all these albums?! Or does the log of your media player do that for you?

Yup. Kept track of it myself
I only kept track of albums if I thought I'd listen to them at least more than once. I'd share the full list, but it's kinda long, as you may imagine.
Ah I have an idea, here I've pasted it in a Google doc, let's see if the link works: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1n0Qo3oEH5gw088OMULbnMQ6Eam5DsmvQ2Ill3Fj3-a4/edit?usp=drivesdk

Incredible! And I thought these kind of things only people from my generation or older would still do manually -- or bother with doing at all -- nowadays.

Good idea for end of year list, to put in favourites released this year as well as new discoveries from past years/old revisits. I might make a list like this.

It's a lovely mix of old and new, brother (Lord Belial never dies, Megadeth never deths )
I see you've enjoyed the new Sulphur Aeon too, I don't think I've heard about it from you before. I like that band a lot and so the new album too

So imminently visible - this cloaked innocent guilt
Sentenced to a lifetime, a second of structured chaos
Trampled by the ferocious, raging crowds of solitude
I'm the soil beneath me soaking up the sustenance of my own death.
