The Emperor HAS Returned

It would probably not be too much of an over-generalization to say that Celtic Frost fans are divided into two groups. The first group is made up of extreme metal fans who see the Swiss band's seminal records like Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion as the major influence and inspiration on the black, death and doom metal genres that they definitely and unquestionably are. The second group consists of the people who love Celtic Frost for their fearless avant-garde attitude that manifested itself on Into The Pandemonium, when the band incorporated gothic, operatic and even industrial elements into their abrasive metal style.

I absolutely love "Ground", "Os Abysmi Vel Daath", "Domain of Decay", "Tottengott" and "Synagoga Satanae". This is great stuff. Blend of doom, gothic and brief slightly thrash-esque moments.

I like the sound and recording quality, but the songs are just too plodding and sludgy. The original Celtic Frost had great bouncy rhythms that drove the songs, but this just sort of stumbles along. Only one listen so far.

A very good album, and even better as a comeback. Pummelling heaviness and beautiful, classic overtones make 'Monotheist' the beast it is.

Just listened to this again. It's quite good, though I still prefer Triptykon's debut.

I was only 16 when this came out and it blew me away. Nine years later it's still one of my favourite albums of all time.

CF's best, and possibly the 2nd best extreme doom metal album in history behind Transcendence into the Peripheral.

not really avant garde I don't think, more blackened doom

This definitely deserves to be in the top 200 a lot more than most of the other gothic metal albums

Monotheist is probably Celtic Frost's best album (As good as To Mega Therion and Morbid Tales are), and it's one of the best comeback albums out there. It is something of a disappointment that they never followed up on Monotheist, but what a way to sign off.

But they did follow up Monotheist, that’s what Triptykon is.

I suppose Triptykon could be seen as a follow up (and Triptykon is really good also). It's definitely got that distinctive TGF sound, but it is also a bit of a different direction musically to Celtic Frost. Then again, Monotheist is a pretty different direction to earlier Celtic Frost. So I guess it depends on perspective. Either way, great album.

Fucking love this album. While I'm more likely to relisten to Morbid Tales or To Mega Therion, this album is brutally depressive and heavy. It's a close toss up between this and Mega Therion for my favorite.

I'm not sure why but I've never loved this album as much as others.

For me, CF are all about Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion. I care for this much less.
