I don't want to be that guy, but... It's their second without Älvestam.

That's...going a bit far if you ask me. He's a decent vocalist, capable of growling and singing clean, but it's not like he made the music.
And it's not like everything he touches is gold either.

Honestly, I never understood the hype surrounding Scar Symmetry. It's always been a midrange band. Having read this nice review, I doubt I will check this album.

Saw them in concert last summer in a festival, it was a really nice gig, with a lot of energy and the public responded very well. There are pretty ok for me. For the last album, i like it a lot (I'm Swiss and I love Cheese)

Likewise. When I was first getting into metal they were one of the first bands I heard that used growls and cleans and I was super excited and then their melodies...I was in heaven. Then I expanded my tastes and soon discovered other good cop/bad cop bands and melodic death metal as a whole and have always thought of SS as a rather generic - as you say - mid-range band.
Their albums are very...pop-structured I find. Like you get one or two really good songs, the equivalent to singles, and the rest of the album is just filler.

I would agree with a lot of this review if it was for Dark Matter Dimensions as I thought that was a pretty boring album. I thought The Unseen Empire was a huge step up from that, but still not quite reaching the level of their old material.
I'm surprised to see people call them a "mid-range" band. Holographic Universe is one of my all-time favorite CDs that still gets regular play today, as well as Symmetric in Design. I'll agree that they aren't at that level today but I still feel those are absolutely phenomenal CDs.
But, opinions and all that

Especially funny considering we agree and disagree on a lot of the same things and some different things but we're all still talking about the same band.

Wise people should not judge this band negatively only because of "Christian isn't in the band anymore". It's just silly and immature.
SS gave us evidence, that they still can create really awesome stuff.

Totally generic midrange (thanks Daniell for that word in this context) band who were?lt good with Alvestram either. I find Alvestram to be one of the most overrated vocalists ever. His growls are decent as are his cleans, but nothing greatl Akerfeldt and Swano are both infinitely superior in that field.
SS with Alvwstram is a nice stepping stone band if you're easily impressed.

I haven't listened to anything before or after Holographic Universe, but as a live band they are still top-notch. Don't know how they were with Älvestam on stage, but when I've seen them in August the two new guys delivered a very energetic performance and I guess if had I seen them Älvestam, I wouldn't have had the impression to see a band instead of a one man show.
So I can't say a lot about this album, but whatever they played from it live came across quite nicely. I'd definitely recommend catching them on stage whenever they are in your area

I've seen two versions of the cover art. The other version is so much better, I don't know why they didn't just use that for all their copies of this CD:

I love Holographic Universe too, but I think Dark Matter Dimensions is vastly superior to The Unseen Empire. As Troy mentioned briefly, at least they did some experimentation in Dark Matter Dimension with some unique melodies, but The Unseen Empire comes across as generic cheese and the guitars being drowned out by the annoying clean vocals...

I think this one and Symmetric in Design are their best. It took a dozen or more listens to really start liking Unseen Empire, but in the end they sound quite a bit better with the new lineup IMO.

Troy, as much as we may disagree on some things, you seem capable to have an actual discussion amongst the baseless and blind hate I see all over metal sites. For that, you have my
I still think your review is pretty harsh though
That said, I do agree that Christian can be a little overrated at times. I do think he's a great vocalist but to be honest he hasn't put out anything I've really enjoyed since Holographic Universe. Solution .45 was an alright release but just seemed like a more straightforward (i.e. less sci-fi) version of Scar Symmetry that wasn't as good. No idea what the general consensus is on Miseration or The Few Against Many though. I prefer my melo-death with an emphasis on the melody and, to me, it's his melody vocals that separates Christian from other vocalists.
Regarding the "cheese" people are talking about. That's another comment I'm surprised to hear. I don't really see it except maybe on The Anomaly and Domination Agenda (especially DA). Even then it didn't really bother me. You guys have some examples of this cheese?
I'm listening to this CD again and I forgot how much I liked Illuminoid Dream Sequence. That riff is killer.

And my review is probably a little over the top, but that's how I roll.
As for Alvestam, I do agree his voice adds to the melody of the music he's singing over. He's almost an instrument in himself. Like Kurt Cobain would say, vocals are just another instrument. That being said, it just seems like a lot of the stuff he lends his voice to sounds so completely generic. I'm not sure if it's his choosing or if it's just the way it works out. I haven't liked a single release with his name attached to it since the first two SS albums, and even then they aren't exactly as great as many people make them out to be. And, as Marcel pointed out, there are others who do the clean/growling thing a lot better than him. But that might be because the music accompanies their talent a lot better.

Agreed, Solution .45 doesn't have quite the awesomeness Scar Symmetry with Christian had.

Troy, you are all over the map lately, and this review is obviously the result of you dropping soap during a prison riot. A 4.5 rating? I mean I understand giving Lulu a low rating because of your fanboy disappointment, but come on! Production is obviously better than a 5, so are we to understand that you are now just a troll here on Metalstorm?? I expect a logical assessment from someone who is supposed to be "staff". Just because SS doesn't fit your favorite depressive, grindcore genre, doesn't mean they are a bunch of talentless hacks as you are so rating them. With or without Alvestam the band is above average at the very least, and I would say there are moments on nearly every album that are melodic stokes of genius. Holographic Universe was one of the best releases of 2008 and with an average rating of 8.6 it is plain to see that most everyone else concurs. It's fine to express your opinions and troll about in the responses, but we expect a little more realistic and thought out assessment from a staffer rating an album, otherwise this great website is little more than someone's blog, full of inane opinions and blather.

Their cheesiness is not in my opinion a suitable argument for not liking this album, that is, if you ever cared about the band. I mean, their catchy, almost poppy clean vocals is what made me like Scar Symmetry in the first place (when Alvestam was still part of the band). When brooooootal stuff is getting on your nerves, you don't necesarily go for Katey Perry: there's a wide range in between and SS is closer to a metalhead's tastes...
Though I agree DMD sucked enough to make me avoid its follow-up.

On the contrary; while their earlier works were undoubtedly cheesy, the songs were still structured in a way that made them more interesting. And songs stood out more throughout the album, as if more thought was put into each section. These new albums just emphasize how overly melodic bands can get away with a total disregard for songwriting.
