And whether my posts make sense to you or not is irrelevant since I only was stating how I judge music, not how others do it. Except for the thing I said about reviewers needing more spins to judge music as well, because in all fairness I can't say a thing like that. Aside from that I still stand by everything I said.
Yeah no problem, can't imagine how crazy this last hour must have been for you haha. Hey, usually, when I go out of my way to include this ugly ":P" or any other emot it means it's humour, it was my way of saying that I could finally understand your point. I don't write off people's opinions as nonsense when they happen to go against my way.
Yeah, poor guy, that OP.

Yeah, poor guy, that OP.

Yeah, every time I refreshed the page I had like 1-3 new notification during the last hour or so.

But okay, good to know this discussion has ended, more or less. (yeah, this emoticon kind of sucks, even though I somehow regularly use it...)

Well, if anything, it's popular as fuck now.

I've seen lots of people state they "need" multiple spins to judge an album. For example, this album seems to have that effect on the majority. The term "grower" is used for that, as you know. And it's a term often used at that. Doesn't make it a fact of course, but my point is that people in general often refer to a certain album as a "grower".

I definitely need a few spins to judge an album on average. Seldom do I like anything on first listen. Though I can usually dislike something on a 1 listen but even then it could be a couple of listens.

For example new Morbus Chron took a few listens to figure out I didn't like it.

I'm still plugging away at new Mastodon too.

The difference is that when I watch a movie, I pretty much give it my full attention. I always combine music with stuff like Facebook and MS (mainly) so I rarely give it my full attention. When it comes to movies I literally always judge them after one view (but my opinion can change after multiple views as well, for the record). The replay value of a movie is far less important as well. Most movies that I've watched I only saw once. In case of music replay value is far more important. If I buy an album, I expect it to spin it multiple times. When I buy a movie I might watch it twice in a few years, or maybe even three times, but more than that is very uncommon.

I agree with this too.

Watching a movie is an active task. Your primary focus is watching the movie. Others tasks like shoveling food into one's mouth is secondary and almost subconsious.

Like Eric I listen to music at work or at home and do other stuff whilst I'm listening to tunes. And there's other factors such as my mood, my health, whom I'm with (not easy listening to new tunes with a family), interuptions etc.

I also like to get to know the ins and outs of an album and know it's every nuance. That takes time and many repeated listens.

But I guess I'm still wrong as Joe, Alex Fenger, Marcel et al have already decreed the entire human race must make an opinion after a single listen.

This is just getting ridiculous. You play this victim card/me against the world (of MS) across different threads! It's beyond annoying and honestly pretty pathetic. Once again, people have stated their opinion - that it doesn't require more than one listen to grasp an album - and others have stated they believe it does. Nothing more, nothing less.

As others have pointed out, maybe you wouldn't have as hard a time grasping an album if you listened to music in the same way you watch a movie. Or maybe it comes down to you lacking the skill to comprehend things aurally. Not everyone learns by simply listening, and maybe more visual learners have trouble grasping new music immediately. Speculating/guessing, not assuming of course.

*facepalm* What an inferiority complex...

The discussion ended on a positive note. And during the whole time neither Erik, nor I, nor anyone else resorted to something like that. Why does it have to re-start with personal accusations? Is that really necessary? Instead of actually discussing the matter at hand, people will only reply to the gratuitous shots you take at them. I mean I can't understand the logic. And that comes from someone who supposedly "likes debate". You don't like what comes out of the debate, you like the debate, and by debate, I mean the convoluted way of discharging your anger, aggression and fear in the form of forum posts.

Well, after 1 spin I can most of the time tell whether I like it enough to give it more spins. But yeah, sometimes I have the same experience, as in: not liking something after more listens, or vice versa.

Yeah, there's a big difference in how much I pay attention to movies and music. That doesn't mean I like music less, but it's simply nice to combine it with other stuff. Actually I'd assume most people do this, since not everyone has loads of free time so that they can spend hours a day just listening to music without doing anything else besides it (I sure as hell haven't). Fine by me if people do that, but not me. Also, multiple spins are a necessity for me when it comes judging the replay value. If I don't enjoy an album anymore after 5-10 spins, I would never consider it a masterpiece. All my 10's are albums that I've listened to many times (most of them 20+). I pretty much always listen to music alone (except when I'm in the train to work and back), because I can't enjoy it if I know someone else might not enjoy it as much as I do. So it's highly personal for me. In any case, it seems we totally agree on this then. Or rather: we judge music the same way.

I usually can tell if I hate something in 1 spin.

Stuff like Mastodon or Morbus Chron requires effort as there's elements I like and elements I dislike. It's a matter of repeated listenings to see whether the likes or the dislikes prevail.

Yup - totally agree.

I prefer to listen to music by myself but life doesn't allow that. Very often I'll buy a CD and then have to listen to it in 3-4 sessions due to time constraints and family life. Even listening to at work means I'm focused on work and there's always interruptions ala phone calls, meetings or people coming into my office.

It was easier when I was a teenager and I would just lie down on my bed and listen to music.

It's also influenced my musical tastes. I've grown to like shorter, catchier songs because lack of time and "life noise" means I don't have time to focus on long and complicated opuses. Basically I have to be able to come in and out and pick up a track straight away. I also like listening to the whole song and that's much easier with 3-5 minutes tunes than longer ones. E.g. overall the whole weekend all I managed to listen to was the first 4 tracks of Shadow Fall's Art of Balance and that was whilst playing with a 2 year old!

450+ albums in less than one year?

That's like almost 10 times as much as what I've listened to so far this year.

You said so yourself many times, you're working and have less time now. It just depends on your occupation and if your work allows you to have music on.
Edit: he stopped rating them after number 137. So maybe he just listened to those 137 albums.

True, but even when I was studying/unemployed I didn't even come close to guys like the creator of this list.

Well according to my last.fm/notebook/album votes I'm not far from 350 since april/may when I got back into metal, and into hardcore. But that's exceptional because I am discovering a whole new genre I love, and I sometimes listen to ten albums in a day. But then I am unemployed/looking for a job, and when I'm working, it's from the comfort of my home.

U should see this list more as a semi-complete list of all prog related releases ive heard of this year. im thinking of adding genre descriptions to the bands, so it will be easier to read through. im also a music writer for the norwegian music magazine Hissig.no, so i figured i need some place to just dump all records i might write about.
currently im writing an article on all norwegian prog related metal n rock releases this year. u can find the first part at this adress: http://www.hissig.no/ny-norsk-prog/
im writing in norwegian, so if u dont translate, just check out the sound-links

Guess what?

Unemployed person in India who's visa expiring in 2015 and ain't go no job.

No wait, only today I got the offer letter from some Agri Tech company and will start my venture after Dusherra(festival in India). Man, golden days will be missed. I'm back again on this fucking job but only one good thing which really comes out of it is I'll be able to listen to new records from office.
