I recently discovered this band via Four Dimensional Flesh and was absolutely shocked by the quality of the material on that album. I can't wait to hear that one for sure.

What an uninteresting record. After hearing all the hype, I'm pretty disappointed

This one has really taken me by surprise, it's even one of the best brutal death metal releases I've heard this year, rarely have I come across a death metal release this year containing such an interesting variety in songwriting, and is as well crafted as this. There's plenty of groove, great solo's, exceptional drumming, and it's outstandingly produced. "In But Not Of", "Angels Feast On Flies", and "Devils With Dead Eyes" are the tracks that stand out above all for me.

Insane thing to say after rating the latest Sanguisugabogg a 10/10

This one is super experimental with lots of ambient/atmospheric elements unlike their previous records, without compromising on the tech-death part, and it's great.

That band and album are way more entertaining than these guys, I'ld argue they are not even that comparable since Afterbirth are going for something with a little bit more depth and atmospheric.
Sanguisugabogg is simpler but way more entertaining than this

To each their own I guess, but to me Sanguisugabogg are the definition of boring and uninspired death metal, while this album is fresh, original and has surprises waiting around the corner in every track

Definitely more of a focus on atmosphere as opposed to technique, and it works fantastically. An unexpected surprise to be sure but a welcome one.

One of my new favorites of the year, if not the decade. Before I was into extreme metal, grunge was my go-to subgenre. Afterbirth has found a way to grab the atmosphere of the grunge and post-punk sound of the late 90's and fuse it seamlessly with the vicious, unforgiving death metal that we come to expect from the NYDM scene. An incredible piece of work.

I really enjoy the album, but it's telling that my experience with it jumps drastically whether they're doing brutal death or some wild tangent into a different genre - I kinda have the same thing with some grindcore album where I like them when they're not being grindcore; I can't really say whether it makes it a successul stylistic fusion or not.

A tiny bit of Suffocation in here, same kind of riffs and sound, with a touch of spacy atmosphere from time to time, thanks to some synth. Those don't sound death metal, but are a nice contrast to the brutal music. It almost ends on Vangelis and PInk Floyd. More than that, the tracks sometimes sound like post metal, so yes it's quite dreamy. The sound is rather organic and doesn't resemble the typical overproduced brutech.

Possibly the album of the year, and this and the new Zenith Passage album are the best death metal I’ve heard in ‘23.
I can’t get my head around the low rating here, especially given some pretty ordinary stuff in the current top 20. But hey, it’s all subjective.
