The Best "(Melodic) Death Doom" Albums

Here's a list that contains only Death Doom and Melodic Death Doom Metal albums, so Gothic (check out my other list for that), Funeral or Sludge Doom etc. are NOT included here (but elements from those subgenres might be present in some of the albums on this list). The reason I made this list is because "death doom" is easily one of my all-time favourite subgenres of music in general. Also, there's not a single similar list on MS to be found (at least to my knowing), hence why I feel people who are into this subgenre can use this list to find out more great music. The list is ordened to my own preference and all these albums are worth at least an 8/10 (the alphabetically ranked albums on the bottom of the list will eventually be ranked among the others, but I haven't listened enough to those to do so). The styles (pure/melodic/atmospheric death doom metal) of the ranked albums are also added so it's easier for people to find what they're looking for. I only add 1 album per band for the sake of variety as well as for keeping the list comprehensible. Lastly, give me suggestions so I can check 'em out and add them to the list (only albums that are featured on MS).

I so much agree with Brave Murder Day in the first place, but I don't agree at all with Anathema's Silent Enigma in 10th,hmmm I would place it in second and also Rapture's Songs For The Withering is so low in this list, and I would place it among the first ten, well I think I agree with the rest

Thanks! Well, The Silent Enigma is still very high (which it should be of course), but not good enough to be any higher in my opinion. And as I wrote in the description, the ranking and ratings is simply my opinion, so I don't expect anyone to agree with it 100%, since that's almost impossible. The albums on the bottom aren't rated yet though, notice the lack of ratings!

Nope, read the description: only (melodic) death doom allowed for this list, so no other subgenres. And Dracanion Times is "gothic doom" in my book, so I won't ever add it.

I don't have a Last.fm account and you're not the first to ask/suggest to get one, but I'm not planning on creating such an account since I don't feel I need one. And thanks for the suggestions, but A Dream of Poe seems to be labelled as "gothic doom" everywhere, so I'll listen to it first before adding it to the list. Vin de Mia Trix isn't on MS, so won't add it, sorry.

Glad to see you like it (finally some recognition ), thanks! Definitely will check out Chalice of Doom and Falling Leaves, as both have really high ratings here on MS ). Added them to this list as well, since (as the description says) I'll eventually check everything out and this helps me remind me of that.

The newest Chalice Of Doom is loads better than quite a few albums in this list.
As well as The Second Ring Of Power by Unholy

and to limit myself to Dutch death doom
Beyond Belief's compilation called Dawn should also be in it.
Mystic Charm - Shadows Of The Unknown
Celestial Season - Forever Scarlett Passion and Solar Lovers
Castle - Castle
Spina Bifida - Ziyadah
Sad Whisperings - Sensitive to Autumn
Whispering Gallery - any of their three full-lengths would do
Orphanage - By Time Alone or Oblivion although there is a bit of Gothic in there as well
Abysmal Darkening - No Light Behind
Delirium - Zzooouhh
Mourning
Necro Schizma
Nymphea Aurora
Sempiternal Deathreign - The Spooky Gloom
Eria D' Or
Morphia
Phlebotomized - Immense, Intense, Suspense.

btw yes I know some bands have released only demos but those are still really well-known names within the Dutch doom scene and also in the international doom scene

Oh man, I shouldn't have said that in the shoutbox just now. Just kidding of course , but I'll only add full-length albums of bands that are featured on MS (also the "invisible" bands of course), otherwise this list will be far too big. I also might go back to 2 albums/band when the list if getting really large.

And I know you (and other people) might not agree with how I ranked the albums (it's impossible to 100% agree of course, but I already removed the ratings since then it's a bit too extreme I think), but I ranked them since I like it a lot more than a boring alphabetical ranking (which also seems too easy for a list like this). By the way, The Second Ring of Power is already on this list, but not properly ranked yet. I assume all this stuff is worthy of this list, but I'd like to have the absolute best stuff on here (so all your 9's for example, since you don't hand out 10's, hahaha). I don't have the time now, but I'll add your suggestions later.

Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 05.08.2013 at 17:51

Okay, then I'll add them, since there are more albums on here that aren't 100% death doom, but I just want to avoid the true gothic doom stuff.

Haha obviously they are in this list, it's a great band. Have to give the debut a bit more spins though since I'm not very familiar with it yet. I know Depressed Mode and from what I recall they are too funeral doom to be on this list, sorry (but if I'm totally wrong here, let me know).

Yeah. And it'll be my last list ever or at least for many months I think (unless I decide to do a best to worst list of Summoning after all, but I feel they're too consistent for a list like that). Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I've heard all of those already, but didn't consider Bilocate because in my memory it wasn't really death doom. Listening to it right now and I was wrong, hence why I added it. Didn't add Doom:VS because of that one being funeral doom, but actually it sounds way more like Mourning Beloveth than (for example) Ahab or Shape of Despair, so also added. Virgin Black's most recent album wasn't added because of the gothic elements but it's indeed more death doom than gothic doom, so also added.

Oh, and you're right about Orphanage but I'm not sure and have to listen again to decide whether to add them or not (the first two albums are already on my other list and try to avoid the gothic stuff for this list). So what? MS is lacking quite a few absolutely brilliant death doom bands, since MS is NOT a band database as such. So, imo, even though those bands are featured (either invisible or visible) here on MS they do deserve to be mentioned in a list which pretends to list the BEST death doom albums
