Wacken Open Air 2009 was a huge disappointment for many metal fans. In 2008 the world's biggest heavy metal festival has booked Iron Maiden as headliners and has raised the bar a bit too high for its own good. In 2009, the 20th anniversary of this legendary festival, a lot of bands appeared which have played in the years before already, but no uber headliner a la Iron Maiden to justify the high ticket price. Many people blamed the W:O:A to rely on its name only as the 20th edition was sold out eight months prior to the festival. In 2010 however the Wacken Open Air proves all these critics wrong...
Iron Maiden are back again! And this time they aren't the uber headliners of 2008, but only primus inter pares ("first among equals"): thrash titans Slayer, glam metal monsters Mötley Crüe and the father of shock rock Alice Cooper are also confirmed as headliners for the 21st edition. And as always there are a few special performances: Grave Digger celebrate their 30th anniversary by performing the entire "Tunes of War" album, a show which will also feature some special guests, while Swedish gothic metal pioneers Tiamat will be performing their legendary "Wildhoney" album, 20 years after the band Treblinka mutated into the Tiamat we know today. But even if you don't care for either of these bands, Wacken once again offers a wide array of metal styles for almost everyone: black metal with Immortal and 1349, death metal with Cannibal Corpse and grindcore supergroup Lock Up, power metal with Kamelot and Stratovarius, heavy metal with U.D.O. and W.A.S.P., modern metal with Fear Factory and Soulfly, etc. etc. etc.. All in all a whopping 122 acts will perform on five stages over a period of four days.
Wacken Open Air takes plays in - surprise! - Wacken in Northern Germany, a small village with merely 2,000 inhabitants on 361 days of the year. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km northwest of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. Certainly not the cheapest, but probably the most fun way to get to and from Wacken has to be the Metal Train. The "railway to hell" equals one huge party of 850 metalheads in one train with 16 wagons, which includes two dedicated disco wagons. Check the website for the schedule and prices.
The festival is officially sold out since April. Most tour operators (e.g. Metal Train for Germany, Bock Tours for the Netherlands, Germany, Austria or Switzerland, Argon Events for the UK) still have tickets in stock though.
Another way to acquire your ticket would be the ticket exchange in the official forum which aims for eliminating the black marketing going on eBay and reducing the risk of acquiring fake tickets. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Next up is Caliban, even though i haven't seen any of these bands so i'm not entitled to whine lol i find it weird that Wacken concentrates mostly on European bands for some reason

Posts: 10107 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 07.12.2009 at 14:09 can't judge on Caliban yet, but i give them credit though for variety in the line-up of next year, this year there were no death metal bands apart from some obscure groups on the WET stage or something and very very few black metal bands, i actually voted for more death metal on the 2009 survey, simply because i felt there were a bit too many power/heavy metal bands on the bill(and half of them boring ones at that, Dragonforce, Hammerfall, Rage, Axel Rudi Pell, Gamma Ray which have precisely 2 good songs, Heart of the Unicorn, which of course they didn't play, and I Want Out(which is also a Helloween "cover"), etc.). on a side note i've started listening to Cannibal Corpse and i actually like it, for the December announcements i'm still hoping for Candlemass, Scorpions, 3 Inches of Blood, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth.

Their music really doesn't speak to me but what I think is worse is their choice of singer. Their singer has no charisma at all and a voice that even I could top. But one of the other band members (a bass or a guitar player) who sings a few lines here and there really has a beautiful and powerful deep voice allowing him to growl breathtakingly without having to scream to even make a noise like the other guy. If they changed that, maybe they could convince me

This christmas calendar of theirs seems to have a few serious bugs. Looks almost as if they fed the daily content manually into the page at some time between 4 and 8am. Every other night if I think of it, I check it out and it never once worked before I got out of bed. Seriously lame.

Posts: 4313 Written by Valentin B on 08.12.2009 at 11:03 I don't know what a bad-ass hacker you are or what information about their security you have but the last time I actually hacked a remote database is quite some time ago and it took me weeks. And I don't think the knowledge of a festival's booked bands is worth the hussle. And the only quick way there could possibly be is through injection or xss since they have these forms there but even then you don't know if that data ends up in the same database (which is unlikely) or is processed othewise. Plus, there are way easier means of protecting agains fraud like that. You would think that the hour work put in a sanitizing filter is a small price compared to manually work on the server once a day. Maybe they're just lazy programmers and didn't do a lot of testing

Lol i just realized sometimes i'm trying to force myself into liking some of the bands on a festival bill, especially for Wacken, i guess it's partly because it was my very first festival experience and it's gonna be pretty difficult to top in terms of enjoyment and great crazy memories playing in your head like a photo slide-show with Running Wild's "The Brotherhood" playing in the background  anyway, bring'em on!! i just hope on the 24th it's not gonna be some totally overrated band like the new Accept incarnation or Cradle of Filth or whatever(not that i don't like Accept, just that they aren't the same without Udo)

Next band appears to be Orden Ogan. Wow, they've run out of big names quickly... edit: although from what I'm just now listening to on their myspace player, those guys are a very good old-school power metal band. I might check that out.

Hm. The answer to the next question seems to be Endstille, but they were there this year. I doubt that the fact they finally have a new singer justifies inviting them again just one year later.

Posts: 9720 Written by corrupt on 08.12.2009 at 11:10 They have the Xmas calendar since a few years now, only normally it was just a quiz and this time they've decided to combine it with band confirmations just like Summer Breeze does (which has confirmed Hail of Bullets, Origin, Insomnium, Long Distance Calling and The Devil's Blood in the meanwhile by the way). The Xmas calendar never worked right after midnight because they are lazy fucks and normally you didn't mind as it only used to be a bloody quiz anyway. I still don't mind as Wacken isn't really about the bands for me anymore.
