Secret Tracks: Songs And Audio Pieces That Were Left Off The Track List

Secret tracks, sometimes also called ghost tracks, unlisted tracks or hidden tracks, are songs or audio pieces that were left off the track list of an album.

The easiest way to hide a secret track is providing the space for a distinct track that is just not listed on the back cover. However, there are also other possibilities:

Multisided records are vinyl records that have more than one groove per side. Therefore, double-grooved LPs can contain the secret track in the second groove.
Moreover, some vinyl records contain audio in the locked groove, which is usually silent and used for keeping the needle from drifting into the label area.

Compact discs may contain secret songs in the pregap of a track. Therefore (depending on the CD player), the secret track is not played automatically, but has to be manually back-scanned to be started.

In general, secret songs are often placed at the end of the final track, which contains the listed song and the unlisted audio separated by some minutes of silence.

Enhanced CDs may contain tracks that are not recognized by regular CD players but can only be detected as multimedia files by a computer.

In rare cases, two tracks have to be played simultaneously in order to either complement each other or to suppress distorted parts, resulting in a reconstructed song.

In general, there seems to be a trend that fewer secret tracks are produced for new releases. Moreover, re-issues of older albums often contain formerly secret tracks as listed bonus tracks or omit them entirely, especially for digital versions of the album.

Please feel free to suggest more examples of secret tracks on metal/hard rock albums.

Another fun list. Apart from Mastodon's which you have already featured, these are the first ones I can think of.

Sylosis - Monolith: has a hidden track after 10 minutes of silence in "Enshrined".

Korn - Follow The Leader: has a hidden track in the final song and the first 12 tracks are silence. From Wikipedia:

The original physical release features 25 tracks. The album starts with 1-12 tracks silent and each 5 seconds in length.[70] Combined, they represent 1 minute of silence for Justin.[citation needed] In interviews, Jonathan Davis also mentioned a superstition to end an album on track 13.
"My Gift to You" ends at 7:16. A hidden track entitled "Earache My Eye", a Cheech & Chong cover, starts at 10:50 after 2 minutes of silence and an interlude that lasts around a minute and 40 seconds. The track itself is around 4 minutes 50 seconds long.

Thank you for your comment, 24emd. I had bought the standard CD version, where "Reverie" is in the pregap of track 5. In order to reach "Reverie" you could go directly to track 4 ("Atonement") and listen to the end, before the CD player switches to the pregap of track 5 with "Reverie". The CD player shows "track 5" on the display, but counts from - 1.07 sec to 0 sec while the song plays. After this, the regular track 5 (listed as "Reverie/Harlequin Forest") will start at 0 sec. Alternatively, you could go directly to track 5 and rewind back into the pregap. In either case, you cannot reach "Reverie" directly. It is a secret track or ghost track, which would also fit to the album title.

Crimson Glory - Astronomica. (original 1999 U.S. release only)

The final song on the album, "Cydonia", contains a hidden track, which begins about 1 minute after the song ends, consisting of 20 minutes of police scanner recordings about a supposed UFO sighting.

Thank you very much, RCMetal. I have added your interesting example to the list.

Disc 2 of Ayreon's The Human Equation starts with 11 unnamed tracks, going for a couple of seconds each, which are the intro part of track 12. This makes the disc's opening song, Day 12, track 12 on the cd.

"I'll fight you on one condition. That you lower your nipples."
" 'Tis a lie! Thy backside is whole and ungobbled, thou ungrateful whelp!"
