Thanks for the thumbs up.
You mention quite a line of songs here that make me believe that you are a guy that someone got stuck in the nineties (just like me).

Thanks for the thumbs up.
Some effort that was indeed.
But you can only see the tip of the iceberg since my entire list contains about 2,000 songs as of today (though I surely wouldnt claim that they are all in proper order, or that it would be even possible to put them in a distinct order).

You say you like a lot of songs in my list, which is obviously no surprise to me.
Way more interesting for me is which some you dont like.

Yes, you got me.

In the 90's, I was deep into tape-trading and almost all of my favorite bands (Tiamat, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Amorphis, Anathema, Katatonia, Hypocrisy, Cemetary, Edge Of Sanity, Unanimated...) released their debuts and/or best albums in that decade. The 00's more or less disappointed me, most of my once favorited bands wimped out and tried to be "innovative" by immitating rock and pop bands of the 70's and 80's. I didn't even bother anymore to check what Paradise Lost, Tiamat and the like released because you just had to look at the covers to immediately get a clue that their musical direction still sucked. So in the 00's, I basically focused on my daily grind and made some money.
And now, in the 10's, I am spending all that money I earned in the 00's to replace my 90's tape collection by CD purchases.

Sure, from time to time I stumble upon releases of the 00's and 10's that I overlooked in my abstinent years and are worth a purchase, but getting my hands on albums of the 90's is still first priority.

Wow, really only these couple of songs!? That's totally fine with me.
I mean in generaI I dont enjoy Immortal very much either. Just At the HEart of WInter ist so incredibly genious.
With Bathory and Summoning I also dont like every album.
Thats probably because in general Black MEtal is not for me, with several exceptions which you can find in my llst(s).

Hehe. Yeah I kind of had that feeling that I was looking into a mirror here.
I mean, seeing that you have The Fourth Dimension as your favourite album.
Who is even aware of this album nowadays, or would even come across this album today if he had not already stumbled over it back in the 90s (as apparently we both did).
This album is far from perfect IMO, but I do enjoy it. And it was my first Hypocrisy album (must have bought it back in 1996 or so).

I really do wonder about this thing with Cemetary and them not being recognized at all, except again and again by people from Germany I come across. I have the theory that this must be related to systematics in how their albums were spread regionally back then, but I dont have any evidence for this theory.

I do understand your disappointment with the bands you mention and their performance after the 90s in general.
Though I would really like to point to one exception in this line, and that is My Dying Bride. These guys have always been incredibly convincing for me. I mean they never again reached their peak (Turn loose the swans, The angel and the dark river and Like Gods of the sun). But I really do enjoy each and every of their albums in the 00s and 10s.
Anathema I also do find marginally enjoyable these days. Though this is clearly not MEtal anymore.

Do you have any lists on MS?

My unverified theory is that Black Mark and EMP (you probably know them eventhough they are not very relevant anymore nowadays) had a very strong relationship in the 90s. Probably caused and supported by the fame Bathory gained in Germany.

Well, My Dying Bride is probably some kind of an exception, but 34.788%...Complete was quite a letdown and also The Light At The End Of The World released one year later couldn't cure that (7/10 if you ask me).
But I know what you mean, not all of them "heroes of the 90's" sucked in the subsequent decades. Anyway, the only big name of the past never really disappointing me was/is Dark Tranquillity.
I have to admit I lost track (and hope) concerning Anathema. Last album I bought was A Natural Disaster. I listened to it only once and couldn't remember a single track or melody half an hour later. Will most probably listen to it some day again, but I experienced the same trying Judgement and A Fine Day To Exit. I never came back to them because the first impression was no impression at all...

Naah, not yet. I'm still a damn noob on this site, you know?
(and a list would hardly make any sense because at least 30% of my favorite bands, albums and tracks are not listed on MS)

@MDB: Yeah, 34.788% was clearly their worst. But that one was still from the 90s right?
As to The Light at the End of the World: Nooooo! Please give this one another try. It is one their best imo (She is the dark, Into the lake of ghosts, Sear me III -- Just wow!).
@DT: Yeah, I agree partially. They had some outstanding albums in the 00s (Projector and in particular Damage Done for me). But after Character they also lost me.
@Anathema: I would not relisten to Fine Day (Only Release is good). Natural disaster -- yeah, maybe. It is good (Closer, Are you there).
But Judgement, definitely worth a relisten, several excellent songs, in particular towards the end.
Distant satellites is ok and The Optimist , too.

@MS lists: Oh, I have seen several lists on MS where >30% is unlinked. So, go ahead, let us see it. Cheers man.

Make it a Spotify playlist and share!

Yeah I may indeed want to do that one day.
Thing is, I am not sure if each and every song on my list is to be found on Spotify (though probably >95% is).
Other thing is, I use Spotify to check out music that I do not own (yet) to see whether it is worth buying it.
For playlists on the stuff I own on the contrary I use my good old Winamp local media player.
Works quite fine for me though it has its limitations for sure. I feel assured that I will have access to my music any time I want, even in case I temporarily dont have internet connection (which happens annoyingly often lately )
But hey, thanks for your comment any way, will think about it.

That's good news to me. Thanks for letting me know.
I should find the time soon to update this list -- last update is probably already two years old.
My list on the albums is subject to more frequent updating.

It's the same with me, my favourite songs vary all the time, but there are a few that will always remain my favourites, such as Holy Wars, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, War Pigs, Stargazer and Raining Blood, etc.

Great list! I liked the ones that I recognized (mainly from the heavy metal and thrash metal side). Nice to see Tragedies Blows at Horizon and Good Mourning/Black Friday. I love those songs, but I didn't include them in my own list because I wanted to limit myself to 2 songs per album. For your list, I would add more Dio, Judas Priest, and Dissection for sure!

Thanks dude, much appreciated.
I will repeat what I said earlier here: You can only see the tip of the iceberg since my entire list contains about 2,800 songs as of today (though I surely wouldnt claim that they are all in proper order, or that it would be even possible to put them in a distinct order).
And be assured there are several more songs from Dio, Priest and Dissection in the covered part of the list.
I wanted to limit the songs displayed here to a reasonable number so that there is a chance that some people actually will go through it one by one, instead of just scrolling over it.
I though might extend the published part of the list to 300 songs one day.
Let me take a look at your lists now...

Cry Of Man Kind is a great song, I forgot about that one! Not really listened to much Doom Metal for a while, and I haven't to Anathema much, so they have my interest now.

Both, Cry of mankind and (early) Anathema, are excellent and should have your full interest.
But they are still two pairs of shoes, right.

Did you change the order of some of the top songs? Or has it just been too long since I've looked here and I don't remember that you had Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Dantes Inferno, Symbolic, and Polaris so high?

No, I did not change the order of these songs in recent months, if not years.
These are classics, no need changing their order.

Good, I have just revisited your list. It is growing, nice.
With respect to my list, you can only see the tip of the iceberg, since it covers some 2,900 songs in total as of now .
But it would obviously be ridiculous to display them all in an MS list.

I have now updated the lower end of this list, taken out some songs below rank 200 and added several songs that grew on me recently. I now display 270 songs here, so it is growing though I will really try to not let it get too long, I promise.

Oh shit! Those are some awesome songs! The Sentinel Suicide Machine, Tornado of Souls, Tormentor, Melissa, Left Hand Path, Override the Overture, When Cannons Fade, Solarfall, South of Heaven...
