The Best Of Dissonant Metal

Metal art of dissonance as I love it.
Rules:
- on album per band, unless the band has very different albums.
-I'm not picky for albums released before 2000.
-I'm not picky for genres that are to some degrees unusual for the dissonance, like sludge metal.

This list is open to suggestions.

check them out, they are mostly really good.
I'm not satisfied with this list to be honest. It seems a little superficial I guess

"Dissonant Metal" is not a real subgenre and I did not intend to make a new one. Albums here are rooted in black metal, death metal and avantgarde metal.

Much of this stuff is beyond my taste, though I do find it interesting to listen to dissonance at work. It's not always easy to get my head around it, though sounds from Terra Tenebrosa, Ved Buens Ende and Virus sit well with me.

Thank you .
I guess you'd better check the last five albums here if you haven't. They are kinda mellow (excluding ulcerate). If you like "fun" death metal, check out Gigan. I guess you are familiar with obscura right?
Most of albums on this list might be too black metal for your taste. I think you liked reverence last year, you can go for DsO, GB and BAN. Beyond these, I don't know what else to say.

I just recently got interested in this imaginary genre
Do you know any band similar to virus that is not in this list? I knew that virus is one of your favorite bands (remember that discussion on your list we had a while ago?)

It's more of a technique than a genre I would say, definitely not imaginary though.
Similar to Virus? One of Joe's recent Staff picks Castevet comes to mind. I'd recommend checking that out if you haven't, great stuff. And I realise I didn't reply to your comment on my list there, Terra Tenebrosa would fit as well, just haven't updated that in a while.

I was listening to some Yakuza today, thought I might mention them here as they remind me of Virus, plus they use some of that dissonant business.

I personally wouldn't lump Ondskapt and probably not Glorior Belli here. For me their style is very harmonious; lots of standard and logical chord progressions, a lot of which are quite melodic.

I somehow agree with you about Ondskapt (although that album will be kept on the list) but GB? That album is relatively simple and even melodic (ass you put), especially compared to DsO, but it does not mean that they have nothing in common with the context of list.

That Glorior Belli album, which I'm listening to now, is only really related to SMRC in style, which itself would be out of place here. Kenose and onwards displayed a more "chaotic" and dissonant approach, with anti-riffs and progressions. This Glorior Belli record has virtually no such riff or tone so far. It's quite a warm record with regard to the progressions and is generally very predictable and palatable I would say, and in no way "dissonant."

Dissonance is not the same as chaos. Dissonance refers to to notes played simultaneously to produce a sound that is, well, dissonant. Used in context, it can sound very natural, as many progressive bands have shown. Glorior Belli's album in question has some textbook dissonant riffs.

Ondskapt, on the other hand, uses simple chromatic sequences, so you are right in that they do not belong here.

Tnx. Demilich has been on my check list for a while now and I have not been able to get their album yet. You just made me ultra curious since I've seen them being labelled as prog death and OSDM. A "dissonant progressive old school death metal" album should be very delicious

That's why I highlighted chaos in quote marks, because they often have the appearance of being chaotic. There is truly nothing dissonant about GB's work. Almost every riff has a warm and standard counterpoint to it. You may as well call virtually any black metal dissonant if they are to be considered so. I would suggest familiarising yourself with more of the bands on this list and you will see that GB do not belong here.

Also, the idea of "textbook" dissonant riffs seem somewhat of an oxymoron to me, as such a riff would be, by these definitions, unusual and unpredictable and far from any known textbook definitions.
