Wacken Open Air 2009 was a huge disappointment for many metal fans. In 2008 the world's biggest heavy metal festival has booked Iron Maiden as headliners and has raised the bar a bit too high for its own good. In 2009, the 20th anniversary of this legendary festival, a lot of bands appeared which have played in the years before already, but no uber headliner a la Iron Maiden to justify the high ticket price. Many people blamed the W:O:A to rely on its name only as the 20th edition was sold out eight months prior to the festival. In 2010 however the Wacken Open Air proves all these critics wrong...
Iron Maiden are back again! And this time they aren't the uber headliners of 2008, but only primus inter pares ("first among equals"): thrash titans Slayer, glam metal monsters Mötley Crüe and the father of shock rock Alice Cooper are also confirmed as headliners for the 21st edition. And as always there are a few special performances: Grave Digger celebrate their 30th anniversary by performing the entire "Tunes of War" album, a show which will also feature some special guests, while Swedish gothic metal pioneers Tiamat will be performing their legendary "Wildhoney" album, 20 years after the band Treblinka mutated into the Tiamat we know today. But even if you don't care for either of these bands, Wacken once again offers a wide array of metal styles for almost everyone: black metal with Immortal and 1349, death metal with Cannibal Corpse and grindcore supergroup Lock Up, power metal with Kamelot and Stratovarius, heavy metal with U.D.O. and W.A.S.P., modern metal with Fear Factory and Soulfly, etc. etc. etc.. All in all a whopping 122 acts will perform on five stages over a period of four days.
Wacken Open Air takes plays in - surprise! - Wacken in Northern Germany, a small village with merely 2,000 inhabitants on 361 days of the year. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km northwest of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck. Certainly not the cheapest, but probably the most fun way to get to and from Wacken has to be the Metal Train. The "railway to hell" equals one huge party of 850 metalheads in one train with 16 wagons, which includes two dedicated disco wagons. Check the website for the schedule and prices.
The festival is officially sold out since April. Most tour operators (e.g. Metal Train for Germany, Bock Tours for the Netherlands, Germany, Austria or Switzerland, Argon Events for the UK) still have tickets in stock though.
Another way to acquire your ticket would be the ticket exchange in the official forum which aims for eliminating the black marketing going on eBay and reducing the risk of acquiring fake tickets. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

If they had presented this as their anniversary lineup, nobody would have complained. They already got the likes of Maiden and Crüe, Immortal, Corpse, W.A.S.P., the 30th anniversary show of Grave Digger and Arch Enemy. Last year at this point they had close to no confirmations, mostly trendy bands on the billing and only (ab)used the name of the brand "Wacken" as selling point. I don't think you can make much of a mistake buying your tic for Wacken 2010 if you enjoyed Wacken 2009 already.

[insert other festival than Wacken] just got owned. my guess is that the guys at Wacken realized that Hellfest, Sonisphere and Graspop are rapidly catching up with their ticket sales and that their #1 spot in the field of metal festivals isn't as secure as it was 3-4 years ago, so now they want to compete more aggressively with them.

Slayer is a band that has played all the festivals loads of times already and almost all metallers have at least seen a couple of times. So once again, like I just said, another immensely boring addition. Still Wacken's line-up is immensely dire cause it holds no surprises whatsoever. Wacken is becomeing more boring by the year and more predictable, and as safe as fuck. Not a festival where you can discover anything new... oh wait Metallers don't want to discover anything new, they just want the same established boring bands over and over and over again.

I've been a metal fan for the last ten years and have been to numerous concerts and festivals and have never yet managed to see slayer. Also I'm kinda counting on the big festivals to bring the bands to me that I otherwise wouldn't pay money for or that don't tour that often if at all. So Slayer in Wacken is perfect for me. I've always wanted to see them but never enough to buy concert tickets. Maybe you have different expectations when it comes to what a festival should do for you, but from my experience, the biggest surprises in a lineup pass you by unnoticed because you only realize what a great band you missed there months or years later. On Wacken '05 (I think, could also have been '06) I saw a way too boring show by Soilwork while on the other stage Opeth were unleashing their fire upon another few thousand people. Man was I disappointed when I got into Opeth a few years later.

Posts: 10107 Written by [user id=26260] on 18.12.2009 at 18:00 Priest will likely concentrate on producing/performing the Nostradamus special show(if they still have that in mind, their website doesn't yield anything), Metallica is far too expensive.. i'd say it's gonna be a co-headliner on the day with Motley Crue, i guess some other relatively well-known band, my money is on the following: Blind Guardian, Children of Bodom, Megadeth, Iced Earth(yes pleeaassee ), Helloween, Cradle of Filth, Anthrax, Dio, Scorpions(yes pleeeasse ), Alice Cooper, Queensryche, Therion..i know, way too many "monsters" in my enumeration but if they're making such a fuss about the 24th announcement it must be worth it right?

Cuase it was clear that that day heaven & Hell should have been the headliners due to status (although Heaven & Hell's performance was mediocre, but still infitely superior to Motley Crue's) A headliner should be a BIG band and Motley Crue wer only big in the US and England. And Motley Cure nowadays aren't anything near the size in popularity they once were. Megadeth have every right to be headliner of Motley Crue. Way mor epopular than Crue

They still have the biggest market share and are still the #1 player in the market... no matter what. Everybody knows Wacken, tells about Wacken, and does everything that is humanly possible to go to Wacken. To be there. Wacken is a very strong brand name. The fact they don't even need to line up something remotely adventurous and still sell out all tickets about 200 days before the opening of the festival, is the ultimate proof of that. In fact, the biggest mistake Wacken could make is competing aggressively. Besides, announcing the addition of Slayer, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Primal Fear and whatnot is not even close to behaving aggressively. They just do what people expect them to do: announce safe, established names that are relatively well-known to almost everybody. And I really don't see any reason why Wacken should change that strategy. Besides, nowadays there are a lot of alternative, albeit smaller events where people can discover the lesser-known gems (like Roadburn, which also sold out pretty fast).

This year it sold out in 28 minutes (that was the three-day Thursday, Friday, Saturday ticket, and thank god NO day tickets available) and the Afterburner on Sunday sold out in 8 minutes (only 500-600 can attend that)
