Pretty good list. Reminded me to queue Edge Of Sanity and Leprous as well.

Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor seems to be missing from all these progressive metal lists. What the hell is up with that?
Also, this list has way too many albums/band. You should limit the amount of albums/band to 2 or 3 at most. But that's just my opinion.

Nice to see Jethro Tull's Stand Up in the list, now that's an underrated album; one of my JT's favourites.

I personally really like that album but there are other ones which I prefer. It might be because I go for edge of sanity when I am in mood for melodic extreme progressive metal

It's lacking your progressive list either. Just kidding. But seriously though, even though Disillusion and Edge of Sanity are both progressive, their music is still totally different. Disillusion is just progressive metal, whereas EoS is progressive death metal. Oh, for the record, I think Crimson is the best progressive metal and also the best death metal album ever.

But Disillusion - Back To Times Of Splendor is almost an Opeth rip-off, so why would you list it?

It's been a while since I listened to that album but I recall no Opeth in their sound whatsoever. Totally different.

on Gloria they didn't have that Opeth sound but if I remember correctly their debut was extremely a lot like Opeth.

A standard list with standard/popular choices, at least for the Prog Rock part. I wouldn't call this an "evolution" of the genre, tbh.

Been listening to Back to Times of Splendor for the last ten minutes or so and I can't find a single element which makes me think of Opeth. Guitar sound, vocals, pacing (much thrashier / more melodeath than Opeth), it all sounds different.

I'm with Joe on this one. Listened to Disillusion's debut many times and it doesn't resemble Opeth AT ALL, despite the fact that it's both progressive.

I ahven't got the album any more so I can't check, maybe I am confusing it with something else. But regardless, this album is totally generic the way you describe it

Nope, not generic at all either. At least not for me... I think it's a brilliant album and no-one can change my mind.

It's an ok album. I think people overrate it quite a bit. Lots of elements don't really every come together and it sounds a bit messy to my ears.

I did not meant that they sound same. EoS plays progressive melodeath and Disillusion plays prog metal with melodic elements and extreme moments. These bands play somehow extreme and melodic prog metal.other than that, I do not see any similarities but this can not discredit my statement: I prefer EoS over Disillusion when it comes to extreme melodic prog .

that I would disagree. I personally hate prog bands that focus on technicality more than songwriting, like those who imimtate the sound of dream theater (and also most of dream theater albums) but progressive metal as a genre is IMO much more diverse than most of metal genres. Also, while I disagree that prog in general is generic, I do not see the point of bringing up this argument, considering that you are a huge fan of a genre as generic as traditional doom (which I also started to love recently and for sure will spend more time on it in future)

doom is certainly generic and I would be the last one to refute that fact. But why can't I say that progressive metal is generic just because I enjoy doom? Maybe I am more capable of juging what is generic and what's not exactly because I am a doom fan so am acquainted with generic music.
As for the diversioty of progressive metal I beg to differ. Black metal and also doom metal (so not just traditonal doom) are more diverse in my opinion.

I did not say that you can not say that prog metal is not generic. I meant that being generic is not necessarily a bad thing, which is the case for traditional doom metal. I also definitely agree that black metal and doom metal are much more diverse than progressive metal, despite the fact that I have listened to much more prog albums but I definitely think that progressive metal is more diverse than, let's say, heavy metal, power metal, thrash meta and even death metal. Based on my experience up to now, I call progressive metal the third most diverse metal genre, right behind doom and black metal

I don't really agree with this. That would suggest it's based on melodic death metal which I don't believe is the case.

I've no issue with calling it progressive death metal, as it has a decent amount of death metal in. Even has a tiny bit of black at one or two points. Extreme prog is what I would call Dan Swano's Moontower album.

I was mentioning that as an evolution of my music taste; not that I objectively think prog "is an evolution of music", but more like in the notion of the word "progress" as with the genre tag. xD
