Best Progressive/Power Metal Albums! (in No Specific Order)
Best Progressive/Power Metal Albums! (in No Specific Order)
These are my favorite progressive/power metal albums that I have listened to. Some of them are for musical technique and others are simply because they blew my mind with the crazy story lines or whatever!

1.
Symphony X
- Paradise Lost
Such a great concept album by a great band. Michael Romeo plays insane guitar and Russel Allen sings with all the grit and mastery of a true metal singer! In the song, "Paradise Lost," Russel Allen not only shows his ability to sing with a rough metal voice, but also a beautiful clear voice. There are no bad songs on the album

2.
Symphony X
- The Odyssey
This album has one of Symphony X's greatest songs on it : "The Odyssey" which is a 25 minute-long song!
|
|
3.
Masterplan
- Aeronautics
A great album where Jorn Lande's amazing vocals almost serve as a reminder of the great Ronnie James Dio!
|
|
4.
Nightwish
- Dark Passion Play
Another fantastic album. With songs like "The Poet and the Pendelum" and "Amaranth," who can not like this album?
|
|
5.
Theocracy
- As The World Bleeds
Very technical and well-written music. "I Am" is a great one if you like really long songs.
|
|
6.
Nightwish
- Imaginaerum
The album was apparently good enough to make a movie on, although the story is a little bit hard to follow.
|
|
7.
Blind Guardian
- At The Edge Of Time
This album involves a lot more orchestral qualities compared to their early style, which, in my opinion, makes them much better than they used to be.
|
|
8.
Blind Guardian
- A Twist In The Myth
For the same reason as "At the Edge of Time," this is one of my favorites.
|
|
10.
Seventh Wonder
- The Great Escape
As if a half-hour long song isn't reason enough to listen to the album, the rest of the songs are amazingly technical and well-written, too.
|
|
11.
Seventh Wonder
- Mercy Falls
Almost as good as The Great Escape! The story of Mercy Falls is touching and a little creepy at the same time.
|
|
12.
Redemption
- Snowfall On Judgment Day
I have to say that "Walls" off of this album is one of my all time favorite songs. The shortest song on the album is 5:15, and most exceed 6 minutes. AND there are 2 10+ minute songs on the album. No song on this album isn't worth some hardcore headband action!

Arjen Anthony Lucassen
- Lost In The New Real
This one is one of my favorites simply because the storyline blew my mind. I think all of the songs are extremely catchy, make you think, and some are even humorous. More on the progressive rock side, although it still has elements of prog metal in it. Basically all of Ayreon's albums involve a similar storyline, but for some reason, I like Arjen's solo album more.

|
15.
Sonata Arctica
- Reckoning Night
Songs like "Don't Say a Word" off of this album are beyond catchy... they are addicting!
|
|
16.

|
18.
Pyramaze
- Legend Of The Bone Carver
Great music, great story, happy ending, and makes you think. What more could you ask for in an album! Although this is a relatively not famous band even in a progressive metal sense, it is worth listening to.
|
|
19.
Nightingale
- Nightfall Overture
Great album! Listen to "Nightfall Overture" song, and you will love it!
|
|
20.

21.
Threshold
- Hypothetical
For all you Power Metal fanatics, this should be on your top 50 list for sure!
|
|
22.
Delain
- April Rain
Kinda like Nightwish and Evanescence, and who the heck doesn't like Evanescence?
|
|
23.
|
|
24.
Rhapsody Of Fire
- The Frozen Tears Of Angels
Very technical and fast music. The guitar-playing done by Luca Turilli is incredible
|
|
25.
Rhapsody Of Fire
- Tales from the Emerald Sword Saga
All of the best songs from the 5-album series entitled "The Emerald Sword Saga."
|
|
26.
|
|
27.
Avantasia
- The Metal Opera
The epitome of fantasy power metal! This album features countless great musicians from bands such as Helloween, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Angra, and more. Avantasia's other albums feature even more great musicians from bands such as Symphony X, and even Alice Cooper and Klaus Meine of the Scorpions.
|
|
28.
Star One
- Victims Of The Modern Age
Another of the many projects by Arjen Anthony Lucassen. The song "Digital Rain" is a great one from the album

- Silverthorn
Amazing new album! However, I would recommend The Black Halo over this one, although Silverthorn still belongs on my top 50 list!

Sabaton
- Primo Victoria
Some of the catchiest riffs ever! Although the singer's voice is a little hard to get used to.

- Sounds Of A Playground Fading
Although this bands/album is more melodic death metal, it still has progressive metal elements and definitely belongs on the list!
