23. Azarath - Blasphemers' Maledictions
Ferocious Satan-woshipping blackened death

Progressive death metal with awesome riffs and solos - just edges out Spiritual Healing.
26. Hour Of Penance - The Vile Conception
Angry death metal
27. Rhapsody Of Fire - Power Of The Dragonflame
Power metal. Guilty pleasure.
28. Decapitated - Winds Of Creation
Death metal. Most stereotypical of their works, but also perfect slab of death.

Death metal. Basically Hour Of Penance with piano.
30. Necrophagist - Onset Of Putrefaction
Technical death metal. Can't get over the melodic solos.
31. Septicflesh - Sumerian Daemons
Death metal. Septic Flesh minus trying too hard to be cinematic.

Atmospheric folk/black. Everyone has to give this at least one listen.
33. Inquisition - Into The Infernal Regions Of The Ancient Cult
Really catchy and really unique black metal

Death metal. Prepare to be In Service Of Time.

Old school death metal

Death metal. Like watching 2001 Space Odyssey with your ears.
46. Watain - Lawless Darkness
Black metal. I just really love Waters Of Ain.
47. Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Black metal. One of the most oppressive, abrasive atmospheric soundscapes ever made.
48. Aeternam - Disciples Of The Unseen
Melodic black metal that pulls of the Egyptian sound quite well. Vocalist does not pull off the Egyptian look though.
49. Deeds Of Flesh - Reduced To Ashes
Pretty standard but well done brutal death metal
50. Defeated Sanity - Psalms Of The Moribund
Just about the most brutal thing ever without trying too hard like every other "brutal" slam band. Also quite technical.

Death metal with lots of headbanging moments.
52. Aeon - Bleeding The False
Brutal death metal with some pretty surprisingly awesome riffs.

Death metal with some synth extras and good lyrics.
55. Putrid Pile - Blood Fetish
Groovy as fuck brutal death metal
56. Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Black metal. Fun Listen
57. Behemoth - Zos Kia Cultus
Blackened death metal. As Above So Below is an all time fav.

Death Metal. The Last Deicide Album that could be mistaken for intelligent music, but who needs that anyway

Thrash metal. Very refreshing and somewhat creative

Melodic blackened death metal with the best Mesopotamian sound

Melodic black metal. Pretty ahead of its time since there are so many copycat bands that haven't done better

Black metal that's just about as addicting as the drugs many of the band's lyrical themes are based on
65. The Faceless - Planetary Duality
Technical death metal. Spacey vibe
66. Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds
Technical death metal with some really good riffs for once.

Old school brutality with some doom

Melodic black with some synth and story
70. Nocturnus - The Key
Morbid Angel-esque death metal, but I like it better than Morbid Angel for some reason

72. Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
Atmospheric black. Best of the US hipster black metal albums.
73. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Black Metal. Defines the sound for Black Metal in the last 20 years.
74. Carach Angren - Lammendam
Classical Inthused black metal. Ghost stories were never so much fun.

Gore metal. If only Reek Of Putrefaction didn't sound like shit. Well, this might be better anyway.
76. Impaled - Mondo Medicale
Gore metal in the vein of Exhumed
77. Devin Townsend - Deconstruction
Progressive metal. Devin Townsend is involved so there is too much to explain.
78. Windir - 1184
Melodic black metal.
79. Gorguts - Obscura
Avant-garde death metal. I wasn't a huge fan of this album until I saw it live. Then I was.
80. Ouroboros - Glorification Of A Myth
Thrash/death

Brutal death metal about gore, battles, and Greek mythology. Awesome.

83. Beyond Creation - The Aura
more technical death metal done well with lots of bass guitar.
84. Severe Torture - Fall Of The Despised
Brutal death metal
85. Belphegor - Lucifer Incestus
Melodic black metal. I can't tell if Belphegor take themselves too seriously, or not seriously enough, but they are fun to listen to.
86. Persuader - Evolution Purgatory
Progressive thrash/power. Some amazing vocal work, as well as some seriously catchy songs
87. Cloak Of Altering - Ancient Paths Through Timeless Voids
Electronic black metal. The War Has Finally Found Us is one of the most addicting songs of all time.

Melodic death metal

Death metal. Over 50 minutes of getting your face raped by people from Brazil

Atmospheric black metal.
91. Antediluvian - λόγος
Atmospheric death metal. This album is so brutal and so dirty that it becomes addicting.
92. Vital Remains - Dechristianize
Melodic Deicide.
93. Dark Funeral - Angelus Exuro Pro Eternus
Black metal. Keep coming back to this album even though there are better out there. Overrated by me.
94. Misery Index - Heirs To Thievery
Grindcore for people that don't listen to grindcore. Death metal.
95. Midnight Odyssey - Funerals From The Astral Sphere
Atmospheric black metal. This album makes me want to go outside at night.
96. Devourment - Molesting The Decapitated
Classic brutal death/goregrind
97. Wintersun - Wintersun
Melodic death metal. Really fun, especially live.
98. Anata - The Conductor's Departure
Death metal. One of the first death metal albums I've ever heard, and not a bad start either.
99. Dark Empire - Humanity Dethroned
More extreme Persuader with the same vocalist, but not quite as catchy
100. Equilibrium - Sagas
Melodic death/folk. Great fun and Mana is absurd in every way.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what definitive genre Meads can be classified as. They definitely have their own sound though, that is for sure.

I see no problem with experimental black.

I see no problem with experimental black.

Well the experimental part is where all the other genres come into play, but yeah that is the best way to describe it. The more I think about it the more I also think that Meads has nothing to do with death metal though.

Nice list - I myself have now limited my list of favorites to 100 as well. I count about 14 bands that we have in common, most notably Emperor, Nile, and Be'lakor high on the list!
Some alternate albums I would choose:
For Death - Spiritual Healing
For Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
For Autopsy - Severed Survival
For Cryptopsy - None So Vile
I'll have to check some of the others here. Cheers!

Definitely nothing wrong with those alternatives, I haven't updated this list in like 10 years so it would be a bit different now haha, thanks for checking it out!

Yep, cant go wrong with those albums haha. My taste has changed a bit in the last 10 years since I made this though, there would probably be a lot more black metal on it these days haha.

Why not update it? I'd be curious to see what you would add and remove.
