Thumbs up: +185
Limited to one album per band and only those featured on Metal Storm.
I feel these albums demonstrate certain qualities that can be of enjoyment to someone who is interested in avantgarde, experimental, extreme, fusion, jazz, post rock, and technical forms of metal.

Everyone's favorite band is on this list pretty much the most varied list on MS

I feel like it could use some more black metal. You have some good BM choices however, like Arcturus. Great list, TONS of variation although i think adding little descriptions on what kind of music they play would be cool

Yeah, that's an area I need to branch out more into when I have the time. Good idea with adding the styles, might save people some time ("I'm not listening to that power metal shit")

Will get that done soon. Last attempt at an update had my firefox crash and lost all the edits, so been a bit discouraged lately.

Well, it's a big list, so take your time. I wasn't trying to criticize, just giving some ideas that i think would be cool to add.

Might want to fix your Shining [NOR] link. It's dead.

Stayed up all night updating the list (it's 5am now) somehow accidentally hit the "back" button on the browser. Lost all the edits, AGAIN. FML

Finally finished the new update, styles/genres will be added next.

EDIT: [Styles Complete]

A tip for the future: when you do big edits, copy it all onto a text editor (OpenOffice, Word, Notepad, whatever) and do them there. Then just paste it onto the old list. Saves you a lot of misclick trouble.

Yes, I definitely learned my lesson. Been using several Notepad files to save progress and avoid that misclick tragedy. Thanks for the advice!

Y U get rid of Coroner?
Also, I think Emperor's In The Nightside Eclipse would be good here. And perhaps something by Toxik, Children or Star One?
Also can you fix the capitolization on Maudlin Of The Well? It's bugging the hell out of my OCD side.

haha "maudlin of the Well" is the proper spelling, they must not like OCD people very much!

I have a little group of albums that I am still mulling over but wanted to keep the list at 215 for now, will add them asap.

Gratz, this list is like a Bible to me, sometimes I go back to take a look. I imagine that your large conception of prog music comes from Prog Archives, isn't it?

And add Circus Maximus the next time you update here

Thanks man, I've grown up using Prog Archives and it has exposed me to much of my favorite music, just like this site. I want to wait until the new Circus Maximus comes out and see if it is better than "The 1st Chapter"... then we shall see where it goes on the list.

I second this. I was a bit surprised to find Moonsorrow's V album but not any Circus Maximus. I can see some prog influences sometimes, but Moonsorrow is not that known for it.
As for CM's new album Nine, I find it nowhere as good as The 1st Chapter, sadly enough.

Edit: Nevermind about Moonsorrow. Missed the 'some orthodox choices' part

Haha I promise I will add Circus Maximus on the next revision of the list in a week or so... but I still do love that new album

Hey, I have a question:
Suppose you decided to add bands not featured on MS? Who would you add out of curiosity?

There are a few on my other list but I would probably add the likes of Yes, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Camel and some of the better Italian prog.
LeKiwi - 04.06.2013 at 04:56
You might want to consider Dissona, although I saw you've already rated their most recent effort so its probably on its way into this list

Ahh.... my question was asked and answered already - bravo and respect for this list. Most comprehensive and informing, very well done, sir!

Some great albums in here, some I don't know, some I don't like, a great list anyway
It's funny how people suggest more bands and albums like the list is missing something, like 261 album list is not more than enough?!

BTW, what's avantgarde about Blackfield?

Are the albums in some kind of order?

Sadly this isn't the case. While this might be a great list as well as guide, I think the last album on the list is also the last album that has been added to the list. I always prefer some kind of order, whether it's alphabetical, by year, genre etc., or even by preference. For this list I would say ranking them alphabetically or by year are good options. Hell, by year would even be the best because that way you can see the "evolution" of progressive music (sure, lots of different genres to be found here, but you get the idea). But I doubt the list creator will listen to us (which is a shame since it's the most popular list on MS and it can still be improved if you ask me).

I have it in the order I think someone getting into progressive metal should listen, those at the end I still need to find a spot for.

Introspekrieg, I also used to really like quoting people like that in one message. The bad thing however is that only the first user you quote gets a notification. Don't know why that's the case. Psykometal pointed this out to me a while ago, as I was doing it as well. If you already knew this, then just ignore this message.

The gradient would be ever so slight in descending rankings, but there is a possibility I'll add the Metal Storm rankings/votes to determine where everything is placed. I wanted the tiers to be like milestones, if you are being introduced to prog start with I and gradually move down the tiers. Opinions of albums change like the wind and I don't want to be restricted to placing a solid rating next to each album.

I had it as a staff pick and think it a perfect album with so much depth, very worthwhile for someone getting into prog. I still listen to it and discover something new every time. I'll see what happens as time goes on, hopefully it maintains it's staying power in the coming years. Pretty much everything in that first tier is solid gold perfection for me.

Ah I see. That makes sense indeed. Ratings sometimes make it too subjective, which now isn't the case. I like progressive metal in general but surely wouldn't consider myself a fan of the genre, so in that sense the tiers are helpful indeed, especially in combination with the genre-tags. So all I can say now is: good job. Oh, and for the record, I'm glad to see Crimson is in Tier I, because that album definitely is a progressive death metal masterpiece.
