So I Heard You Like Opeth...

A concise list of my metalhead man-crushes (now featuring ladies.)

While there is little introduction required for some of these bands and their front(wo)men, there are no words that can accurately describe such jaw-dropping talent anyhow. The albums and youtube links listed are meant to display the full capacity of vocalists' talents, not the bands' most quality or popular tracks - click the links below and behold the prowess.

Many tears will be shed on your behalf if your favourite vocalist isn't here. That being said, any suggestions are more than welcome. A star (★) indicates that the vocalist is exceptionally versatile. If you believe that a certain vocalist deserves a (currently unaccredited) star, then post a few YouTube tracks to support your case.

Avoided criteria:
- Consistency with live performances
- Emotional delivery
- Ability to write aurally appealing vocal lines
- Ability to compliment the music

i.e. The style performances are judged solely on technical ability.

Here are the tracks I've allocated to the vocalists so far in the order of the list below. If you have suggestion which better showcases any vocalist's talents or if any of the link aren't working, please let me know.

It's funny you say that, I was just listening to quite a lot of power metal lately and was planning to add quite a few vocalists in the genre. Wait around, they'll be here soon

Oh, come on...

I find it very hard to believe that there isn't a single power metal vocalist you enjoy.

Why is that so hard to believe?

Something just occurred to me (but it's probably wrong, seeing you added Zetro and rejected Tardy (mean bastard! :p)) - was this meant to be, like, some kind of "objective" (as much as possible) list of great singers (on-key, ranged, classically-inspired etc.)? Recently I thought about a rather strict closed-mindness I could employ in the future, if I happen to have kids who want to (or I think should) be known for their singing - try to surround (cover all options) with only great, "pure" singers, so they're less likely to pick up "bad habits" (like Matt Bellamy's inhalation fixation/"flaw", despite being pretty good with pitch)... I guess that's what I'm getting at - are you wanting to deny/reject every suggestion featuring even slightly pitchy vocals? Or is it... more about range... Pardon the fascist image that may have been evoked with the middle part of this rambling

I guess that's what I'm getting at - are you wanting to deny/reject every suggestion featuring even slightly pitchy vocals? Or is it... more about range... Pardon the fascist image that may have been evoked with the middle part of this rambling

I add vocalists who excel, namely in vocal styles that aren't easily mastered; there's not much more I could say

Oh, come on...

I find it very hard to believe that there isn't a single power metal vocalist you enjoy.

Actually there's indeed one: Roy Khan. And honestly I don't enjoy his very emotional (over-the-top) singing, but his vocals like on this track are definitely great to me:

I don't listen to Kamelot anymore, but I used to be quite a big fan (about 6 years ago). If I had to pick a favourite album of theirs now, it would be Siége Perilous. Simply because it isn't cheesy power metal such as most other PM bands. Okay, that's not true, it's still cheesy but somehow tolerable enough for me, I don't know why.

Why is that so hard to believe?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing (even though I just posted I do enjoy one PM vocalist). I mean, lots of people hate certain vocal styles, like growls or operatic female vocals, "sludge" vocals etc. Power metal vocalists are often very emotional and over-the-top in their singing which makes it sound totally cheesy and that is something I really dislike. Yes, Roy Khan is also cheesy in that sense, but as I said, I somehow can tolerate it somewhat now.

There's always an exception to the rule. Personally I don't enjoy many power/heavy metal vocalists but I have my own exceptions here and there.

He is indeed an excellent vocalist.

And my reasoning behind why I found that hard to believe (regarding you not like any power metal vocalists period) is because, for example, although I dislike the genre of black metal (mainly because of the presence of the vocal style), I have no doubt in my mind that, upon giving the genre a thorough listen, I could actually find one that I like. Which is the case, because I do indeed enjoy the sounds of Agalloch - vocals and all.

I meant no disrespect by my comment, I hope it did not come across that way. I simply found it strange that you were able to write off an entire genre of vocalists when within each genre (especially one as broad as power metal), there is often a wide range of different sounding vocalists, despite the style being similar.

I would recommend Tallest Tree (Henrik Båth of Darkwater):

Oh, you know who else would look good on here? Sebastian Bach and Blackie Lawless.

Oh well, I miss James LaBrie here, his vocals on Dream Theater's Awake were truly outstanding. Even now he sings really well live, saw them two months ago. And maybe even Chuck Schuldiner, I always enjoyed his vocals. Otherwise the list looks good.

Very good list, though I don't understand why Mikael Akerfeldt and Christian Alvestam don't get a star. Both are insanely good.
And maybe you should check the present and former singers of Tesseract:
Daniel Tompkins

Oshe O'Hara

And of course there's Between the Buried and Me's Tommy Rogers which is insane

Wow, this is commitment. Next time I start a relationship, and when the big questions arise, I'll test their commitment by asking them to make lists like that for me. Engagement? Marriage? Kids? No. This guy's list.

This list is more high-maintenance than being wed to Paris Hilton.

Actually, Green Carnation, Dream Theater, and Darkspace could write a song together, and it wouldn't be as long as this list.

Okay, you asked for my recs. But hmmm. Really, I'll just throw names at you, I don't really have the knowledge to technically judge and compare so many differents styles and artists. These are not necessarily my favs, but, I would have said Mortuus, Peter Steele, Garm, Jaz Coleman, ICS Vortex, Kvohst, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell... I want to add David Bowie, Dave Gahan, Jamiroquai, Damon Albarn and Morrissey, but that wouldn't be very relevant .
