Bands listed alphabetically, One album per band (With the exception of Carcass and Napalm Death who appear in the Grind and Death Metal sections). Some bands may not be pure old school (Death / Thrash, Doom Death / Death Doom and early Brutal / Technical Death Included) I have also Included some of the more extreme Thrash releases that pre-dated the genre but undoubtedly help pave the way for things to come, I included these as I wish to give a general summary of the way Death Metal began and evolved throughout the 80's and 90's.

The Grindcore section is not exclusive to old school grind, Im just adding all the good grind albums I know of.

PS: I'm open to Suggestions so if you have any more albums to recommend i'd be glad to check them out.

Fixed Seriously though Leaving out Deicide was an accident. Ive also added the Bleeding by Cannibal Corpse because I have sort of warmed up to them, they still are not my favourite DM band by a long shot but I think a little more highly of some of their albums nowadays (They are in my eyes the worst band on this list regardless).

Yeah those bands are not 100% Grind i agree, But putting them in with the death metal bands didnt seem right to me , Deathgrind i would say but im trying to keep it simple .

Yeh, they have good older stuff also, but that's a great full-length from 1995, which was their last output. Drummer: Kai Hahto (Rotten Sound/Wintersun etc.) Listen if have time/interest for it

I have to say its a very good album, Well worth it if you like Finnish DM, Thank you for the recommendation. It has also been added to the list

Nice list although I am missing some bands in the "Modern" Old school Death Metal (2000+) such as Krypts, Mordbrand, Stench Of Decay, Vanhelgd, maybe even Vallenfyre.


Good news though, Buril - Relinquished Souls will be rereleased in Febraury 2012 with the Frigid Cold demo as bonus on cd on Memento Mori. They just rereleased Acrostichon - engraved In Black with the Dehumanized demo as well (btw where is that one? The best female growler metal has ever seen is featured on it)

Thanks, I honestly forgot Acrostichon and will add it to the list ASAP and you are right her growls are superb, Better than a certain Swedish female fronted band we know eh?, Burial is great and im glad to see it get a reissue, I will be sure to check out the other bands you mentioned. Im a sucker for old school DM so I would expect to see them all on the list soon.
