A List Of Great Debut Albums

A lot of bands have great debut albums. Obviously this list is just a fraction of all the great debut albums out there, but it's a start. I'll keep expanding this list continuously, so all suggestions are welcome (granted they are featured on MS). All the albums here are ranked according to genre and then alphabetically. If a certain album belongs to the (in your opinion) wrong genre, then definitely let me know.

When searching albums of a certain genre, just press "Ctrl + F" and then enter the genre you're looking for. For example, when looking for death metal albums, simply enter "[death]" after you pressed "Ctrl + F" and you'll be at the right place in no time, so it works perfectly.

Forgot about these, but I already added them to this list last week, haha. Machine Head's debut is definitely a brutal album, holy shit. I've heard several albums by them, but this one destroys all of them (haven't heard The Blackening though, which is highest rated on MS) easily.

Burn My Eyes easily destroys the immensely overrated The Blackening.
Actually there is only one album Machine Head which is essential and that is their debut.

I see. Honestly, you know I cannot accurately judge an album after just one listen, but Burn My Eyes impressed me a lot. Simply a brutal kick-ass album (well, that's how I'd descibe it ).

And this is one of the reasons I made this list, since a lot of bands' best album is their debut. In any case there are more great debuts than sophomore albums, I think. Although it's gotten a bit out of hand seeing there are now 190 albums on the list, hahaha.

Great list, man. I really dig the diversity you put in it. If the list continues to grow, that's fine; it should. As long as there are great debuts, keep adding them.

Thanks man! Let me know if there are any essential albums missing, then I'll be sure to check them out. You know my taste a bit by now, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Amorphis' debut is absolutely fantastic, one of my favorite death metal albums of all time. Definitely worth checking out if you ask me

There, I finally added it. Happy now?

Although some of these bands' debuts aren't for me they seem to be appraised. I've starred the albums that I enjoy the most (or enjoyed what I've listen to so far.)

Amiensus, Animals As Leaders*, Beyond Creation*, Beyond Twilight*, Bloodbath*, Cynic, Dissona*, Dragged Into Sunlight*, Hands Of Despair, Headspace, Kalmah, In Vain*, Masterplan*, Necrophagist, Obsidian Kingdom*, Periphery*, Shaolin Death Squad*, Tesseract* (songs from their first EP), Today I Caught The Plague*.

Check it out, I added all of those except for Cynic (you already knew I wouldn't add it... still have to give it a second chance though), Masterplan, Periphery and Tesseract. The reason I didn't add those last three is because the vocals all annoyed me so much I couldn't finish listening to them. Can't help it, but I guess I'm whiney when it comes to whiney vocals.

All of the others were good, great or awesome. I was especially surprised by Animals As Leaders (how the hell do they keep it interesting without any vocals at all? ). Dragged Into Sunlight isn't my cup of tea, but I still rather enjoyed it... still went back to my "own" music very fast after it. Same goes for Necrophagist. Hands of Despair is typical something I really enjoy: great stuff that has a ton of variety going on (really surprising the people here on MS didn't like it at all ). Headspace is actually an example of a band in which the clean vocals ARE good. Very good stuff as well.

Kudos for Fractal Gates, Enshine and Atoma. Oh and check out this if you haven't http://coldinsight.bandcamp.com/. I lump all 4 of these bands together. Also, have you listened to Darkology's debut? Immense sound.

Haven't checked that out, but I will for sure, thanks for the recommendation. Will also check out Darkology's album, but since I noticed it's power metal (fused with progressive though) I'm not sure whether I'll like it. I have a huge problem with standard power metal vocals, I can't listen to them.

Also, I checked out Rosetta's album you mentioned months ago (I never forget things like that ) and sadly I didn't like it. Simply reason really: the distorting sounds ruin it for me. Maybe I should listen to only the first/second disc? It reminded me of Weighing Souls With Sand, which I hated as well (while everyone is praising it a lot). Maybe that style should grow on me, but at this moment I cannot enjoy that kind of music at all, sorry.

I feel the same man, power metal vocals can be a true deterrent for me Same goes for that atmospheric stuff that's garnering quite the attention these days - I just don't have the patience to wait 1 minutes or more for a riff change

The list is becoming quite impressive

Hehe yeah, but then why did you recommend Masterplan? Anyway, I like a lot of atmospheric stuff, but not when it's so heavily distorted you can't hear the actual music anymore.

Anyway, thanks for the +1. I'm trying to have as much diversity as possible (which is hard considering I don't enjoy all subgenres) and add only the worthy albums.

Jørn Lande is god. That's why. He's on my list of most talented vocalists in metal. Check it out if you like

As for the atmospheric stuff, I typically avoid it, however Atoma was a special case (although I only enjoyed some of the tracks of their debut). I don't mind the distortion so long as there's an interesting melody in the background, which isn't the case for most of the bands that I've heard within the sub-genre

See "Saturn & I" or "Highway" by Atoma as a reference for what I find tolerable

Haha... well, I don't enjoy his vocals whether he's "god" or not.

I happen to like pretty much all atmospheric stuff, so that's where we're different I guess. But if it's partly drone then it's not for me. The distortion is horrible if you ask me and totally ruins the "music". I'm baffled that so many people actually love stuff like The Angelic Process. I listened to the whole album (Weighing Souls With Sand) and really couldn't enjoy it. I only wanted to get back to my own music after that, haha.

I really enjoy them cause they're gritty, unlike other power metal vocals. Haha, drone is the worst...

You might want to consider Dawn of Solace's debut The Darkness. Some of the ambient (or atmospheric?) passages can be boring for me but seeing as you like those you might be able to enjoy the album in its entirety. "Dead Air" is probably one of my favourite tracks of all time.

Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream
Cynic - Focus
Deafheaven - Roads to Judah
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Mastodon - Remission
Lurker of Chalice - Lurker of Chalice
Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
The Doors - The Doors
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced

Keep in mind that this list is pretty much only for metal albums. That's why I won't add a few of your suggestions. However, I did add Dismember (really great stuff), Deafheaven (really like this one, even more than Sunbather I think), Godflesh (very unique-sounding and disturbing stuff, but definitely belongs in this list), Mastodon (sludge isn't my cup of tea, but I still I enjoyed this one), Lurker of Chalice (one of the most creepy and disturbing albums I've ever heard), Meshuggah (the album you recommended isn't the debut, but I DID add the debut yesterday ) and Morbid Angel (yep, obviously a classic death metal album that's essential for this list).

I was about to add Devin Townsend's album, but MS only recently added the REAL debut album of him, which makes Ocean Machine: Biomech the 2nd album of him. I really wanted to add it, but now I can't since it's not the debut album... right? I listened to Cynic a while ago and didn't like it at all, so unless I enjoy it the 2nd time, it won't be added to this list. More suggestions are always welcome if you have any.

Apothecary already suggested Hail Spirit Noir, but only just now added it. Also added The Great Old Ones since I really liked it as well, definitely up my alley. Royal Thunder however, I didn't add. Why? I just don't like that style. It's more rock than metal if you ask me and I didn't like those female vocals at all... anyway, more suggestions are welcome (as you can see in this list, black metal is also one of my favourite genres... but keep in mind there are many different genres in this list because I try to have as much diversity as possible, although I still won't add stuff that I don't like at all).

Orkrist especially as there are very similar to Summoning. Listen to their second album too if your interested. I prefer the first one myself though.

My suggestions:
Jesu (post rockish avant industrial metal), N.K.V.D (industrial black metal), Terra Tenebrosa (avant metal/dark ambient), impetuous ritual (blackended death),Aevangelist (blackended death), CSSAB (industrial metal) , devil doll (avant symphonic/prog rock/metal, really unique), Marlion (prog rock), control denied (prog metal), mitochondrion (blackended death), !T.O.O.H! (tech death), beyond the creation ( tech death), anhedonist (death doom, I personally should give this more spins), 1000 funerals (light funeral doom, still enjoyable), wormphlegm (highly tortured form of drone/funeral doom), alkerdeel (blackended sludge), Hjarnidaudi (psychedelic drone doom), Murmuure (psychedelic/ambient/experimental black metal) , weakling (USBM), The Axis Of Perdition (industrial black, really disturbing and hard to get into), agruss (atmospheric black/death), Alrakis (astral black metal a la darkspace), Evanescence, ramstien (industrial metal).
You could have also add at least one debout album Mories De Jong , the front man of Gnaw Their Tongues. I have personally heard the debut of GTT and Aderlating and they are both amazing.
Btw, is this list supposed to be concerned only on metal albums? or more specifically only metalstorm featured albums?

Thanks for the suggestions, but indeed I'll only add albums that are featured on MS. Also, they indeed must be metal, so stuff that's mainly rock is something I won't add (for example, there's Noekk and Riverside on my list, which isn't 100% metal, but I'm not going to THAT strict... it would just be silly ). And I will never add white (christian) metal either. Aside from my personal preference, that's pretty much it. So I'll check out most of your suggestions for sure. But since I have my own stuff to check out as well, it'll be months from now until I listened to everything you suggested.

Ok if you are going to only add those albums which are metal enough, you might omit marlion and devil doll which although featured here, can not be considered much metal. Also, aderlating is horrifying dark ambient so forget about that too (although I still suggest you to listen to these albums for your own musical pleasure)

+30 looks a hell of a lot better than +29, that's for sure, hehe. By the way, why did you delete all your lists? That latest one was pretty popular as well (+18, right?). If you made a list like this one, it would've been twice as large already easily. That being said, the last few weeks have been slow regarding to new debuts, but I'm going to pick it up soon. For months I added 10 debuts to this list weekly, but it seems I'll now add 10 albums each two weeks or so.

My lists were just becoming too much to keep up with. I found most of the ratings changing constantly, and I've just been listening to too much new music to accurately rate them. The 2012 list had nearly no accurate rating anymore, so I decided to scrap them. Maybe I'll make a more manageable list in the future. I have to say I can't think of anything that needs immediate checking out/adding to your list, but if I do think of anything I'll be sure to let you know.

Yeah, I could definitely understand that, especially seeing the amount of albums you checked out (for that list). As I mentioned more than once, I really have to listen to stuff 3-5 times in order to accurately rate it. Sometimes my opinion even changes after 5-10 listens. Hence why I also didn't add ratings to the albums on this list. It would take me years to rate everything, which is ridiculous of course, so I just listen once or sometimes twice (when I'm not sure) to an album and then decide whether to add it to this list or not.
